Senior Legal Counsel – Investment Governance (Brisbane or Sydney) Brisbane, Queensland, Australia Make your mark in constitutional and public law with purpose-driven impact. No constitutional law experience necessary The Crown Law is the in‑house law firm for the Queensland Government dedicated to supporting the State in achieving its priorities and meeting its legal obligations. At Crown Law you will be part of a talented and purpose‑driven team, working on some of the most novel and complex matters in the public sector—work that helps shape the future of Queensland. Your New Team The Constitutional Law Team is a highly skilled group of 11 practitioners who specialise in constitutional and complex public law matters, as well as other significant issues that do not sit neatly within other practice areas. The team also supports the Solicitor‑General in advising on the most important and complex legal questions for the State. The team provides strategic advice to the Attorney‑General and Queensland government agencies on constitutional issues, statutory interpretation and sensitive matters of public importance. Members of the team regularly instruct the Solicitor‑General and the Crown Counsel in High Court proceedings. Recent work has included constitutional and human rights litigation in the High Court, the Queensland Court of Appeal and the Queensland Supreme Court, and advising on duties of excise and freedom of interstate trade and commerce. The team has also assisted agencies in responding to Parliamentary Committee requests, advised on the interaction of State and national energy laws, the limits of executive power and proposed legislation. Your New Role You will advise on some of Queensland's most complex and high‑profile legal matters, delivering expert counsel and representation on constitutional and human rights issues including the interpretation and application of the Human Rights Act 2019 and key provisions of the Australian Constitution. Collaborating with the Solicitor‑General and senior counsel, you will contribute to landmark cases before the High Court and other jurisdictions. You will also advise the Attorney‑General and government clients on statutory interpretation, Commonwealth‑State relations, and the limits of constitutional power. This role is well‑suited to a mid‑level or upper‑junior solicitor with strong advisory skills who enjoys tackling novel issues and adapting quickly. Whether you have experience in government advisory work, commercial litigation, or another area of complex practice, you will have the opportunity to apply your skills to significant public law matters and build a career in constitutional law.
