Volunteer to change lives. Yours included. This volunteer opportunity will help to teach and inspire our residents to learn new music skills, improve their social connections and build self‑esteem. The role would be best suited to someone who has a combination of musical expertise, teaching skills, and personal attributes that foster a positive learning environment, to help our resident's live life to the fullest, through the power of music Iona House is a voluntary, residential youth shelter located in Kirwan. We provide emergency and short‑term accommodation to young women between the ages of 16-25 who are experiencing homelessness. We provide a warm, welcoming and homely space for homeless young women, where they can heal. We teach them practical life skills, including cooking, budgeting, cleaning and other home‑making skills, while encouraging them to take guided steps to improve their circumstances and situation. Our Recreational Therapy program includes planned activities to help reduce anxiety and stress, improve self‑esteem, communication skills, independence and social skills. Music can serve as a powerful tool for self‑discovery, helping young people process trauma, build confidence, and develop a sense of belonging. We have most of the instruments required, all you need to bring is your expertise and love of music and a willingness to teach our residents to play or sing. The time commitment is flexible and can vary, from an occasional hour to more regular weekly involvement. What you'll be doing: Work with and assist our Recreational Therapist to create and implement a music tutoring and practice schedule for the residents; Choose songs and introduce new music techniques to engage participants; Help participants learn and develop new musical skills in small groups and one‑on‑one settings; Assist in caring for, setting up and packing down music equipment; What's in it for you? Build, maintain or contribute specialised skill sets Requirements of this role include: A genuine love for music and a desire to share that passion with others; Proficiency in one or more instrument/s or vocal skills; An understanding of music theory and the ability to clearly explain musical concepts in an understandable way; The ability to plan and tailor lessons to individual student needs and various levels of skill; The ability to provide feedback that is both helpful and encouraging; Enthusiasm, energy and a positive attitude, to create a supportive and fun learning environment. *UnitingCare values diversity in our organisation and we have some principles in place that will help to promote both inclusion and access.
