Mentor/tutors for students of refugee backgrounds You may sit with a student during a class, explaining terms and requirements so they can more easily keep up. Or you may help students meet their homework requirements, making sure they understand what is being asked of them, explaining any questions that might be challenging and generally supporting the students as they transition to life in Australia. We hold some adult classes in library environments or similar if the need is there. Other roles such as supporting Breakfast Club, or Friendship Zones at lunchtimes are also needed. Mercy Connect volunteers usually work with students during school hours and the volunteer commitment is for approximately two hours per week for school terms. Experience working in an educational setting is not essential as you will receive on‑going training and support. Initial training for new volunteers. A current Working with Children Check or VIT registration is required to volunteer with this project. Category Mentoring & Advocacy Commitment Regular - less than 6 months Type Of Work Education & Training, Tutoring & Coaching, Time Required Approximately 2 hours per week during school terms but we realize you may have other commitments during the year. The main thing is that the participants can rely on your regular commitment. Training Initial training is held with small groups of new volunteers with formal training a couple times a year offered in a blended model of face to face and online learning.
