Young Strong and Deadly Coordinator - Aboriginal Identified Wellington Aboriginal Corporation Health Service – Wellington NSW Note: This is an Identified position for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People. Aboriginality is a genuine qualification authorised under Section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination ACT 1977. Location: Wellington (NSW) WACHS is an Aboriginal community‑controlled health organisation that aims to empower Aboriginal people to take control of their individual, family and community health and wellbeing needs through our clinical and community programmes. Our main services are in Wellington, Dubbo, Western Sydney, Penrith, Nepean, and Blue Mountains, and we provide outreach services to other towns and communities through our regional programmes. About the Role: Engage local experienced Aboriginal cultural knowledge holders to explore the positive application of cultural concepts that can improve individual, family and community mental health. Use cultural concepts and activities to reduce anti‑social behaviours and reduce the risk of youth engaging in behaviours that negatively impact on their mental health. Facilitate education and training to primary care providers to enhance the recognition and treatment of young people at risk of serious mental illness and/or experiencing first episode psychosis. This includes general information on assessment and treatment and, for more interested primary care workers, skills‑based training on specific interventions. Facilitate prompt provision of advice and support to primary health care providers in order to prevent or manage a crisis situation. Develop clear referral pathways and protocols into primary health and other appropriate settings for young people who access the service. Work in collaboration with Mental Health Drug and Alcohol Services to facilitate appropriate interventions for young people who have co‑morbidity of mental health and drug and alcohol problems. Consult and work in collaboration with families of young people who are referred to the service, to assist those families to support the wellbeing of their family member. This will include the provision of support and education. Monitor and evaluate the service provided, including the outcomes for consumers and carers. Model and participate in WACHS’s commitment to consumers and carers as partners in care. Collect client outcome measures and consumer satisfaction surveys. Have proven ability to facilitate information and education sessions with youth groups between local Aboriginal cultural groups. Ability to engage and coordinate programmes that engage recognised clinical mental health specialists (e.g. Registered Nurse, Social Worker, Occupational Therapist, Psychologist, Clinical Psychologist). Understand the need for early identification, assessment, and treatment of young people at risk of developing serious mental illness. Demonstrate ability to provide secondary consultation to health care providers. Demonstrate ability to work in partnership with other key agencies and to build the capacity of other services to work effectively with young people with emerging mental health issues. Demonstrate understanding of associated services impacting on Youth Mental Health inclusive of the referral processes, care coordination and case management associated with these services and a capacity to work in partnership and collaboration with these service providers.
