Deputy General Counsel & Coordinator – Criminal Assets Litigation (Information Management) – Sydney Australian Federal Police invites applications for the Deputy General Counsel & Coordinator – Criminal Assets Litigation position in Sydney. The role is at Executive Level, requiring an Australian citizenship, a Negative Vetting 1 security clearance, and relevant legal qualifications. Pay Range A$175,089.00/yr – A$231,035.00/yr What is the role? Criminal Assets Litigation (CAL) is an operational function within the AFP’s Chief Counsel Portfolio that independently litigates proceeds of crime matters. The Deputy General Counsel & Coordinator will lead a team to deliver outcomes in compliance with the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 and other relevant legislation. Responsibilities Lead and manage a team dedicated to delivering a business function to the AFP. Ensure financial and human resources are effectively directed to achieve business area outcomes. Build capability and contribute to corporate business planning and strategy. Lead and manage change with judgment, intelligence and common sense. Develop internal and external networks to facilitate cooperation and partnerships. Mentor and develop team leaders and members. Maintain currency in policy, legislation and subject matter expertise. Provide high-level strategic advice and conduct briefings with senior executives. Negotiate and reconcile diverse views. Qualifications Australian Citizen upon application. Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or ability to obtain one. Tertiary qualifications in Law and contemporary, relevant legal knowledge, with expertise in proceeds of crime and confiscation jurisdiction. Practising certificate as an Australian Legal Practitioner or ability to obtain one. Strong understanding of Commonwealth legal obligations. Experience leading and managing a team of legal practitioners and support staff. High‑quality practice management skills, including finance, recruitment and reporting. At least 8 years experience as a litigation lawyer at government or private sector, with at least 2 years in a senior associate or equivalent role. Experience delivering high‑level complex legal advice to peers, senior executives and private sector. Understanding of Commonwealth and AFP legal and policy framework. Highly developed written, oral communication and negotiation skills. Experience in training and strategic capacity development in a legal context. Analytical skills to assess complex information and engage with legal risk. Ability to deliver high‑level legal and strategic advice to the AFP executive.
