Our Mechanical Workshop operates as a heavy industry environment, vital for the preservation and operational readiness of our historic fleet. We rely on expert engineering support to ensure the integrity, safety, and authenticity of our rollingstock. The Opportunity We are seeking a qualified and experienced Mechanical Engineer to join our dedicated Mechanical Workshop team as a skilled volunteer. This is a crucial advisory and hands‑on support role where your engineering expertise will directly contribute to the restoration, maintenance, and ongoing safety compliance of our unique collection of locomotives, carriages, and wagons. If you are passionate about applying your professional skills in a historical context, solving complex mechanical challenges, and ensuring the long‑term viability of valuable heritage assets, this is a highly rewarding opportunity. Professional engineering expertise is HIGHLY desired for this role. Key Responsibilities & Duties Provide engineering advice and technical support for the restoration, maintenance, and modification of railway rollingstock and workshop equipment. Assist in developing and reviewing engineering specifications, drawings, and repair procedures. Conduct technical assessments and provide solutions for complex mechanical issues. Support compliance with relevant engineering standards, rail safety regulations, and DRR's Safety Management System. Collaborate closely with skilled tradespeople (Fitters, Welders, Machinists), Workshop Manager, and other volunteers. Potentially assist with project planning and oversight for specific mechanical restoration projects. Contribute to a positive and collaborative workshop environment.
