Job Overview Jane Addams Middle – Special Education Assistant 1-1 (Extended Resource) – 1.0 FTE. This position is assigned to a specific male student in the Extended Resource service pathway. Essential Functions Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the teacher. Administers materials and assignments (e.g., tests, homework, graded papers, folders) to assist the teacher in evaluating students’ progress and organizing individual needs. Administers first aid and medical assistance as required. Assists students requiring support with personal care needs due to medical condition and/or physical limitations. Attends meetings and in‑service presentations (e.g., first aid, CPR, emergency procedures) to acquire and convey information related to job functions. Confers with teachers (special education and/or mainstream) regularly to evaluate student progress and implement IEP objectives. Confers with teachers and/or parents (phone calls, e‑mails, parent‑teacher meetings, recording student progress in a notebook) to provide information related to the student’s progress per the individual educational program. Directs and implements behavioral plans for students with behavior disorders or other conditions. Instructs students in a variety of activities in individual and group settings (academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills) to reinforce instructional objectives and implement remediation plans. Maintains instructional materials and student files/records (e.g., checking papers, attendance, adapting projects) to ensure availability and reliability. Monitors students during assigned periods in various school environments (rest rooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots) to aid students and provide a safe learning environment. Other Functions Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit. Reporting Relationships Reports to the building Principal if assigned through staffing formulas. If based centrally, reports to the assigned Special Education Supervisor. Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge Proficiency in basic math (fractions, percentages, ratios), reading manuals, writing documents, presenting information. Instructional procedures and practices. Age‑appropriate student activities. Safety practices and procedures. Conflict resolution. Stages of child development/behavior. Skills Ability to perform multiple non‑technical tasks and upgrade skills as conditions change. Adhering to safety practices. Operating standard office equipment including software applications. Preparing and maintaining accurate records. Ability Gathering and collating data; using job‑related equipment. Flexibility to work with others in varying circumstances. Problem‑solving to identify issues and create action plans. Adapting to changing work priorities. Communicating with diverse groups. Maintaining confidentiality. Working as part of a team. Working with constant interruptions. Keyboard proficiency; basic computer literacy. May require basic signing ability. Responsibilities Work under direct supervision; lead, guide, and/or coordinate others; operate within a defined budget; use resources from other work units as necessary. Working Environment Physical demands include occasional lifting up to 50 lb, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling; fine finger dexterity. Duties may involve handling medically fragile children, toileting, diaper changing, tube feeding, assisting menstruating students. Estimated activity distribution: 45 % sitting, 25 % walking, 30 % standing. A clean, healthy environment with at least 10 % of the time during a 7‑hour period requiring assistance. Education & Qualifications High‑school diploma or equivalent and at least one of the following:• Qualifying score on the Education Testing Service paraeducator assessment, or• Associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university, or• Seventy‑two quarter credits or forty‑eight semester credits at the one‑hundred level or higher, or• Completion of an apprenticeship as a paraeducator in a program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council. Experience None specified. Preferred: Experience working with children. Certificates & Licenses Valid State of Washington driver’s license or evidence of equivalent mobility. Additional Training Secure Training, CPR, First Aid. Clearances Criminal Justice Fingerprint Background Clearance. Benefits Benefits administered by the Washington State Health Care Authority under the School Employees Benefits Board. Eligibility depends on the number of hours scheduled (≥ 630 hours per year).
