General Manager, Energy Trading

Base pay A$400,000.00/yr - A$500,000.00/yr Sydney or Melbourne based. $600,000-$700,000 total package including base salary, super and STI. We are an Australian energy business seeking to appoint a standout General Manager, Energy Trading. This is a rare opportunity to step into a nationally significant organisation at a time of major transformation, where the successful candidate will shape the strategy, performance, and culture of a highly influential markets function. In this role, you will lead a team responsible for wholesale strategy, trading and risk, portfolio optimisation and market performance across electricity, gas, and environmental markets. You will work closely with the executive team to drive disciplined decision‑making, deliver strong risk‑adjusted returns, and ensure the organisation is positioned for success as the energy system continues its rapid shift towards storage, firming, and renewables. Key Responsibilities Lead and uplift the trading, portfolio optimisation and wholesale market functions. Drive commercial strategy across spot, contract and environmental markets. Oversee bidding, dispatch, hedging, risk frameworks and portfolio performance. Build high-performing, analytical teams with strong market capability and discipline. Collaborate with commercial, retail, generation and strategy teams to optimise outcomes. Provide clear, insight‑driven advice to senior leadership and the board. Deliver a step‑change in culture, accountability, and market performance. About You You will bring a deep understanding of the National Electricity Market in Australia and a proven track record in wholesale energy, trading, or portfolio optimisation. You thrive in complex environments, make sharp commercial decisions, and bring a leadership style that is calm, data‑driven, and decisive. We are seeking someone who can bring: 15–20 years’ experience across electricity, gas or energy markets. Leadership experience as Head of Trading, Head of Energy Markets, GM Wholesale, or similar . Strong capability across hedging, bidding, derivatives, risk management, and portfolio optimisation. Excellent stakeholder skills, with the ability to advise senior executives with clarity and credibility. A collaborative, grounded leadership style that inspires high performance. Experience from a major retailer, gentailer, generator, flexible asset operator, trading house or large industrial energy user.
