We are seeking a talented and experienced Software Engineer to join our dynamic team at BSS INSIGHT PTY LTD in Mount Waverley, VIC 3149 . This is a full-time position where you will contribute to the design, development, and maintenance of enterprise-level software applications and mainframe systems that support complex business operations with our cutting‑edge software solutions. What you will do Design, develop, and maintain mainframe applications using Natural/Adabas, JCL, and related mainframe tools and utilities. Analyse system, data, and program requirements to ensure effective alignment with business objectives and performance standards. Modify and enhance existing programs to improve efficiency, scalability, and maintainability. Participate in requirement analysis, technical design discussions, and solution architecture for mainframe and distributed system integrations. Develop, document, test, and implement software components across both legacy and modern application environments. Debug, troubleshoot, and optimise mainframe programs to identify and resolve performance bottlenecks or logical errors. Write and execute test plans and test cases, validating that system changes meet design and functional specifications. Conduct peer code reviews to ensure adherence to internal coding standards and industry best practices. Support data migration and transformation processes between legacy and cloud-based systems. Monitor job executions, identify abnormal terminations, and perform root cause investigation for production issues. Maintain version control using Git-based repositories, such as Bitbucket and GitHub, to ensure the traceability of all changes. Contribute to continuous improvement and CI/CD processes, automating build, test, and deployment workflows where applicable. Prepare technical documentation, including user manuals and operational guides, for both new and existing systems. Identify risks that affect software reliability, performance, or security, and implement mitigation strategies throughout the development lifecycle. Provide technical guidance and participate in evaluating and costing proposed software solutions and upgrades. About you Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Information Technology (or equivalent qualification). Proven experience as a Software Engineer or Mainframe Developer, with exposure to Natural/Adabas, JCL, COBOL, or similar mainframe technologies. Strong understanding of structured programming, database design, system architecture principles, frameworks, and development tools. Familiarity with Agile methodologies, DevOps practices, and CI/CD pipelines. Excellent analytical, debugging, and problem-solving skills with a focus on delivering high-quality, reliable software. Strong communication and teamwork abilities, with a commitment to continuous learning and improvement. Experience using Git-based version control systems (Bitbucket, GitHub) and automated testing tools.
