Park Maintenance Officer

In this role you will carry out programmed maintenance and improvement works in various parks and open space reserves in an efficient, effective and safe manner. All maintenance and improvement work must align with Hume City Council’s acceptable standard work practices, policies and procedures. Responsibilities Maintain and improve designated turf surfaces including reserves, streetscapes and recreation areas. Operate tractors, front‑deck mowers, trucks, brush‑cutters and other mowing and turf‑related machinery to assist with maintenance, renovation and development of Council assets. Remove all litter, branches, rocks and other debris before commencing mowing operations. All unwanted material will be removed by operators before leaving the site or reported to the relevant team leaders and departments for action. Assist with the removal of tree limbs and other tree parts causing obstruction to mowing within designated areas. Work as part of a team to improve and maintain Council parks, open space reserves and other designated areas using safe and efficient work practices. Assist in ensuring staff members have adequate knowledge of the equipment they are to use, including inductions and all relevant safety policies and procedures. Assist in accurate recording of work undertaken, for the effective monitoring of the service. Assist in recording the plant and its usage at each work site. Drive various Council vehicles to transport staff, equipment, supplies, etc. to the work site. Ensure that all vehicles and equipment are kept in a clean and tidy condition. Operate equipment with due regard to personal safety and that of co‑workers and the general public in accordance with relevant legislation. Provide comments or information where appropriate to improve the service and obtain industry best practice. Assist the Team Leader with programming of works to achieve the required standard of service, keeping accurate records to monitor progress against the programme and reporting any problem areas. Skills & Experience Demonstrated knowledge and skills in the safe operation of tractors, front‑deck mowers, trucks and associated plant and equipment. A basic understanding of the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 and relevant safety standards and codes within the industry. Experience in maintaining and further improving parks, reserves and horticultural assets. Good communication skills and ability to work independently or within a team environment. Capacity to identify improvement opportunities across Council assets. Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and individually. Demonstrated ability to resolve day‑to‑day operational and work‑group issues or problems. Required Certifications & Qualifications Certificate III or higher qualification in Horticulture or Turf is preferred but not essential. Medium Rigid Truck Licence is preferred but not essential. Traffic Control Roadwork Signage Attainment is preferred but not essential. Why Hume City Council?
