Senior Technical Officer - Dive Fisheries Apply now Job no: Work type: Full timeLocation: HobartCategories: Laboratory & Research Support, Farming, Animals and ConservationDelivering advanced field operations that underpin sustainable research on Tasmania’s unique dive fisheries Seeking a motivated and outcome-driven individual to lead a dynamic team Full time, ongoing role based in Hobart About the opportunity We are seeking a motivated and outcome-driven individual to provide technical leadership within the Dive Fisheries Team at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS). The Senior Technical Officer (STO) supports research on Tasmania’s invertebrate dive fisheries and contributes to related projects across the Wild Fisheries Program. The role oversees technical operations, manages resources and staff, and ensures all field activities meet Work Health and Safety (WH&S) standards. Working with senior researchers, the STO will plan and deliver field programs, including dive and underwater imagery sampling surveys on wave-exposed rocky shores. The position also supports laboratory analyses, sample processing, and the management and analysis of research data. What you’ll do: Provide technical leadership and coordination for field and laboratory operations within the Dive Fisheries Team. Plan, manage, and implement field research programs on invertebrate dive fisheries. Develop, maintain, and innovate technical systems and equipment to support field surveys and data collection. Manage data quality, analysis, and reporting, ensuring accurate, timely, and well-documented research outputs. Foster effective collaboration and communication within IMAS and with external partners. What we’re looking for: A degree in a relevant scientific field, for example marine science, environmental science or aquaculture. Practical experience and knowledge in fisheries and marine ecological research. Knowledge of abalone and/or commercial dive fisheries, and/or the biology/ecology of the species they harvest. Demonstrated ability in the use of scientific computer programs (R, word-processing, spreadsheets and databases), simple statistical analyses and GIS operations. Demonstrated ability to work with a high level of autonomy, using initiative and judgment with a solution focus. Salary details Appointment to this role will be at HEO 6 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $116,872 comprising base salary within the range of $92,120 to $99,891 plus 17% superannuation.
