Senior Legal Officer Department of Justice QLD Pay Range Base pay range: $118,967.00/yr - $127,941.00/yr. The actual pay will be based on your skills and experience. Position Overview The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) is seeking a Senior Legal Officer (P04) for a 3‑month temporary role in Cairns. This role offers the opportunity to lead complex and challenging matters referred to the ODPP for prosecution and to manage a dynamic team. Responsibilities Prepare prosecution cases on complex matters, including appeals, with professionalism and timeliness. Collaborate and manage relationships with stakeholders such as defence counsel, solicitors, police, victims, and witnesses to maintain clear, respectful communication. Advocate in court for appeals, sentences, committal hearings, and bail applications across the Magistrates, District, or higher courts. Engage with complainants and relatives, especially in cases involving sexual or violent offences, with sensitivity and compassion. Lead and mentor legal officers and support staff, inspiring high standards and professional growth. Identify opportunities to improve work practices and streamline processes. Qualifications Expertise in applying legal principles, drafting documents, providing advice, and acting as a court advocate with confidence and professionalism. Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to navigate multi‑stakeholder environments. Proven track record of mentoring, training, and supporting legal teams to achieve outstanding results. Trauma‑informed, culturally sensitive approach when supporting victims of crime. Commitment to maintaining high standards of ethics and competency in all aspects of work. Mandatory Requirements Admission as a Legal Practitioner in a State or Territory of Australia (please provide your admission date).
