Join Tasracing – Where Integrity drives the industry forward About Us Tasracing conducts the commercial and regulatory functions of the Thoroughbred, Harness and Greyhound racing industry in Tasmania and operates under the Racing Regulation and Integrity Act 2024. The Tasracing Integrity Unit (TIU), is responsible for racing integrity and compliance, is seeking expressions of interest for the position of Sampling Official in the North or South of the State. The Role: The Sampling Official plays a pivotal role in the execution of the TIU’s rigorous drug control program. The successful applicant will be responsible for the collection of samples from Standardbreds, Thoroughbreds or Greyhounds at race meetings, trial meetings, and stable and kennel visits, which subsequently undergo drug analysis. Reporting to the Chairman of Stewards on raceday, the successful applicant will undertake official duties in accordance with the Rules of Racing and industry protocols. Key Responsibilities Sample collection: Collect, or assist veterinarians in the collection of, biological (urine, blood, hair) samples from horses and greyhounds, following strict protocols and procedures. Sample handling: Ensure proper handling, packaging, labelling, and secure storage of samples to maintain integrity and chain of custody. Record keeping: Accurately record all information related to samples, including the animal’s identity, sample type, collection date, and all other required information following strict procedures. Animal care and handling: Identify any welfare concerns and elevate these to the Official Race-day Veterinarian(s) or Stewards(s). Teamwork: Collaborate effectively with officials, veterinarians, trainers, and participants to ensure the smooth and efficient execution of the sampling process. About You Applicants should demonstrate the following skills, knowledge, and personal qualities: Availability to work weekdays, evenings, weekends, and public holidays in accordance with the racing calendar. Knowledge of and a desire to contribute to the integrity and regulation of racing in Tasmania. Demonstrable and confident horse and dog handling skills and a thorough knowledge of animal safety, health and welfare. A knowledge of sample collection techniques and processing procedures advantageous. High standards of integrity, and ethical and respectful behaviours; Strong attention to detail, excellent communication and organizational skills, ability to work efficiently under pressure, with a high degree of accuracy. Willing to follow directions and comply with policies, procedures and protocols, and to work effectively in a team. Sound computer literacy skills. As this position is an integrity role, all prospective applicants are required to disclose any actual, potential, or perceived conflicts of interest prior to consideration for appointment. In addition, any successful applicant will be subject to a probity assessment prior to final approval, and must comply with the TIU Betting restrictions and Conduct requirements. Given the nature of the position, you will be required to work nights and/or weekends as well as Public Holidays.
