About Us The Tasracing Integrity Unit, responsible for racing regulation and integrity, is seeking expressions of interest for the position of Clerk of Scales at Thoroughbred race meetings conducted in the North and South of the State. The Role The Clerk of Scales plays the vital role of ensuring that all jockeys carry the correct riding weight during thoroughbred horse races. The position also acts as a central communication and administration point for raceday officials and operations. Reporting to the Chairman of Stewards, the successful applicant will undertake official raceday duties in accordance with the Rules of Racing and industry protocols. Key Responsibilities Using official materials and equipment, weigh out all riders prior to each race, ensuring that handicapped weights, apprentice allowances, minimum riding weights, and approved overweights are correctly applied. Ensure all riders weigh out with all mandatory and approved gear. Notify the Chairman of Stewards of any discrepancy in a rider’s weight or gear prior to finalising weigh out. Monitor the jockeys’ area to ensure no gear is added, changed, or removed after weighing out. Weigh in riders post‑race, confirming that correct weight has been carried and reporting any discrepancies to the Chairman of Stewards before correct weight is declared. Provide evidence in Stewards’ Inquiries as required. About You Availability to work weekdays, evenings, weekends, and public holidays as scheduled in the racing calendar (typically once or twice per week). Knowledge of and a desire to contribute to the integrity and regulation of Thoroughbred racing in Tasmania. Knowledge of Thoroughbred racing terminology and race meeting operations, or the ability to acquire this knowledge quickly. Ability to interpret and apply the relevant Rules of Racing relating to the weighing process and apprentice claims system, and to escalate breaches. Familiarity with approved jockey gear, or the capacity to rapidly gain this understanding. High standards of integrity, and ethical and respectful behaviours. Strong work ethic with the ability to remain calm and focused under pressure. Highly developed problem‑solving and analytical skills. Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team. Sound computer literacy skills. Qualifications & Commitments As this position is an integrity role, all prospective applicants are required to disclose any actual, potential, or perceived conflicts of interest prior to consideration for appointment. In addition, any successful applicant will be subject to a probity assessment prior to final approval and must comply with the TIU Betting restrictions and Conduct requirements. Given the nature of the position, you will be required to work nights and/or weekends as well as public holidays.
