Applications are invited for Registered Nurse to work across our Neonatal service with includes a 20 bedded level 2 local neonatal unit and a 6 bedded transitional care unit. We are within a large District General hospital. We are looking for highly motivated, compassionate and enthusiastic nurses to join our neonatal nursing team. We have a full available for individuals with a positive attitude and good communication skills. Our Local Neonatal Unit is situated within Northampton General Hospital and is part of a large integrated Child Health Directorate as well as a part of the East Midlands Neonatal Operational Delivery Network. The unit offers comprehensive neonatal services which include 2 designated Intensive Care cots, 4 High Dependency cots and 14 Special Care cots. The transitional care unit is situated within maternity and is led by a Neonatal transitional care Lead Nurse. The successful candidate will be supported by our education team with an appropriate competency structure to enable you to learn the role of the neonatal nurse. We are proud to be the first hospital in the UK to have obtained Pathway to Excellence designated accreditation from the American nurses credentialing centre (ANCC). The Child Health Directorate achieved 'Good' across all areas of CQC assessment in 2017. Main duties of the job The post holder will assist in the overall nursing care ensuring delivery of high standards of care to patients and their families within the ward. They will act as a clinical role model providing leadership and support to both nursing and medical staff ensuring the promotion of a safe working environment. The post holder will be responsible for the assessment, development, implementation and evaluation of high dependency and special clinical care to vulnerable neonates across the Neonatal unit and Transitional care using a philosophy of family centred care. An expectation that the post holder will maintain high professional standards, keep abreast of research and developments within the neonatal field and support the neonatal team in the smooth running of the unit. This will mean that the post holder will be expected to undertake the neonatal foundation course within 12 months of employment and the neonatal Qualified in Specialty Course within 2 years of employment About us Northampton General Hospital is one of the largest employers in the area and we are on an exciting journey. Job responsibilities Act as a role model in customer service towards visitors to the hospital. Undertake induction and competency programmes appropriate to the role. Take responsibility for the management and organisation of the clinical area. Participate in setting and reviewing standards for practice and evaluating outcomes as part of the clinical governance agenda. Undertake the Trust Corporate and Directorate specific development and competency Programmes. To contribute to annual appraisal and be responsible for own personal performance / development plan to achieve KSF outline for role. Able to identify learning needs in self, negotiating a Personal Development Plan recognising own limitations. To undertake any expanded roles deemed necessary for the role following the Trust policy Expansion of Professional Practice for Registered Healthcare Practitioners. To be responsible for the safe supply, storage, administration, checking and disposal of medications including controlled drugs. To promote and maintain effective communication both written and verbal. Undertake the Neonatal Qualified in Specialty Course. Actively undertake education, development and supervision of other staff members, assisting them in meeting work demands to provide a quality patient experience. Work collaboratively and co-operatively with others to meet the needs of patients and their families. To be responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of patient care. To coordinate the patients discharge arrangements in accordance with NGH Local Discharge Policy. To ensure the education of patients and their carers as required where a need has been identified. Assist the ward manager in the completion of a training needs analysis and ensure compliance of the team with Trust expectations in relation to mandatory training, role specific training and appraisals. Assist the ward manager in the development of team members through education and support. Assist the Ward Manager in the monitoring of the workload and skill mix and ensuring the ward operates effectively and safely. Ensure that self and all nursing staff practice at all times in accordance with the NMC code of professional practice, raising any concerns with the ward Manager. To maintain a suitable learning environment for staff and act as a assessor in the supervision and teaching of less experienced staff, supporting and facilitating their development. Contribute to the development of Trust and directorate policies, procedures, standards and guidelines and ensure compliance of self and others. Person Specification Skills Able to lead junior members of the ward team Able to develop and maintain meaningful relationships with staff, children, families and their associates Able to cope with emotional needs of the family Able to provide excellent Clinical care to intensive care infants and support staff in emergency situations Computer literate across a range of IT programmes Skills and experience in implementing changes in practice, influencing for the good and overcoming barriers for all levels of staff Ability to prioritise workloads of self and team Experienced in teaching both formally and informally Knowledge & Experience Knowledge of current National Health Service (NHS) Policy and professional issues which have an impact on neonatal services Knowledge of audit processes Knowledge of relevant developments in neonatal care An awareness of research and evidence based practice in the clinical setting Organisational skills and be able to work within/lead a team Evidence of extended clinical skills (i.e. venepuncture, Cannulation) Skills in using research in practice development Education, Training & Qualifications Knowledge of child protection issues and procedures and in date level 3 training Knowledge of clinical governance relating to neonatal care Evidence of ongoing development through continuing professional development Will undertake neonatal foundation course within first 12 months of employment or provide evidence of equivalent training Will undertake Qualified in Speciality course in neonatal care (English National Board 405 or equivalent) within 2 years of employment Holds a first level degree in nursing or related subject and willing to study to Master's level.
