Storage & Backup Engineer The Storage and Backup Engineer is responsible for managing data storage and backup systems across both on‑premises (physical data centers) and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, M365). The primary goal is to ensure critical business data is securely stored, regularly backed up, and readily recoverable in case of system failures, data loss, or disasters. This role designs and implements storage solutions, oversees backup and recovery processes, maintains data integrity and compliance, and acts as a guardian of enterprise data—bridging on‑premises infrastructure and cloud services to provide a seamless, reliable storage and backup strategy that supports business continuity. Key Responsibilities Design & Implement Storage Solutions: Architect and deploy enterprise‑level storage and backup solutions spanning on‑premises and cloud environments (SAN/NAS systems, cloud storage services). Backup Strategy & Management: Develop, execute, and maintain backup policies and procedures; monitor backup jobs daily for success/failure; optimize schedules and methods for efficiency. Disaster Recovery Planning: Create and update disaster recovery plans; conduct periodic backup recovery tests and drills to verify successful data recovery within RPO/RTO targets. System Monitoring & Optimization: Monitor health, performance, and capacity of storage and backup infrastructure; tune systems for optimal performance and plan for future growth. Troubleshooting & Support: Troubleshoot backup or storage failures and data access issues; restore functionality to prevent data loss or downtime; provide expert support for backup/restore requests. Data Integrity & Security: Implement access controls, encryption, and immutability for backups; ensure compliance with data protection regulations (e.g., GDPR, ASD Essential 8). Documentation: Maintain comprehensive documentation of storage architectures, backup configurations, procedures, and recovery instructions. Collaboration & Training: Work closely with other IT teams to integrate storage/backup solutions; provide guidance or training to junior staff on best practices. Technical Skills Deep knowledge of on‑premises storage systems (SAN, NAS, DAS) and cloud storage technologies (AWS S3, Azure Blob Storage). Proficiency with enterprise backup software and tools (Veeam, Commvault, Rubrik, AWS Backup, Azure Recovery Services). Ability to automate tasks using scripting/programming (PowerShell, Python, Bash); familiarity with Infrastructure‑as‑Code tools. Strong understanding of server operating systems (Windows, Linux), virtualization platforms (VMware/Hyper‑V), and storage networking protocols (iSCSI, Fibre Channel, NFS, SMB). Experience implementing secure backup storage (encryption at rest and in transit) and ensuring compliance with relevant standards. Specific experience managing NetApp Storage and CommVault Backup products is essential.
