What you’ll be doing The Department of Psychological Medicine at The Sydney Children’s Hospital Network (SCHN) is seeking an Aboriginal Mental Health & Wellbeing Peer Worker to join its Mental Health service. The Sydney Children’s hospital Network includes the Sydney Children’s Hospital (SCH) and the Children’s Hospital Westmead (CHW). It is the largest provider of children’s health services in Australia. Clinical care, education, research and advocacy are the key pillars of SCHN. The SCHN Department of Psychological Medicine (Mental Health) spans the Randwick and Westmead precincts and is the largest child and adolescent mental health service in NSW. The Department provides assessment and treatment to children with mental illness or neurodevelopmental disorders services including two dedicated inpatient mental health units, psychiatric emergency teams, and consultation‑liaison services at each precinct. Additionally the Department provides the largest telemedicine child and adolescent psychiatry service in Australia to regional NSW. The Aboriginal Youth Mental Health & Wellbeing Peer Worker will utilise their lived experiences of mental illness to support Aboriginal young people accessing SCH Mental Health Service (including within the Emergency Department, inpatient wards and outreach services) and supports the delivery of culturally safe services. The Aboriginal Youth mental health & wellbeing peer worker is embedded within a multidisciplinary team to support Aboriginal young people develop hope, autonomy and purpose. They role model recovery with mental illness is possible and in the process support Aboriginal young people engage with family and community by upholding the importance of culture, spirituality, and identity. They promote the importance of employment; education; physical health; and mental health. Additionally the Aboriginal Youth Peer Worker ensures SCHN Mental Health team provides a culturally safe and welcoming environment for Aboriginal young people and their families/carers. The Aboriginal mental health & wellbeing peer worker must be connected to Aboriginal culture and community, identify as Aboriginal and be recognised as such by the community. They must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the local Aboriginal community and share their experience and knowledge of Aboriginal culture and community when sharing their lived experience. The Aboriginal mental health & wellbeing Peer worker is an integral part of the service and works as equal partners with clinicians in providing proactive community support for Aboriginal young people with mental health issues. This position may be required to work weekends and on an adjusted start and finish time depending on service need. About You To be a person of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. Aboriginal / Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under Section 14(d) of the Anti-discrimination Act 1977. CHC43515 Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work (Consumer) or willingness and commitment to obtain within 18 months of employment. A demonstrated knowledge of the Aboriginal concept of social and emotional wellbeing including and understanding of Aboriginal family structure and Aboriginal culture and wisdom. This will include an understanding of the practical and emotional issues that may arise when working with Aboriginal young people with mental health concerns and their families.
