About the role The Data Engineer plays a pivotal role in modernising Housing Australia’s data engineering practices by designing, building, and optimising enterprise‑grade data pipelines and infrastructure that enable strategic, data‑driven decision-making. The role is essential to unlocking operational efficiency, data‑driven intelligence, and innovation through scalable, secure, and automated data delivery capabilities. Drawing on expertise in data pipeline development, database optimisation, and cloud‑native data management, the Data Engineer ensures reliable and efficient processing, transformation, and delivery of data to underpin analytics, automation, and digital product experiences. This role also ensures compliance with governance, security, and data‑quality standards across the entire data lifecycle, enabling trustworthy, high‑value data assets for the organisation. Key responsibilities Contribute to the execution of the organisation’s data strategy, providing technical insights on data sourcing, integration, and delivery Collaborate with data governance teams to align engineering practices with data standards, compliance obligations, and policy frameworks Design, build, and maintain robust ETL/ELT data pipelines for structured and unstructured data across multiple cloud and on‑premises systems Optimise data ingestion, transformation, and storage for performance, cost efficiency, and scalability Implement and maintain automated workflows using orchestration tools such as Azure Data Factory, Synapse Pipelines, or equivalent Manage and optimise cloud‑based data infrastructure, ensuring performance, resilience, and cost efficiency Implement scalable storage and compute solutions to support large‑scale analytics and AI workloads Implement data governance and quality controls to ensure accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of data Enforce access management, encryption, and audit controls in collaboration with the Cyber Security team Working collaboratively with the Data Architect, define and apply standards for data validation, cleansing, profiling, and enrichment Proactively identify and mitigate data risks, ensuring alignment with Housing Australia’s enterprise risk management framework Work closely with the Performance, Data & Analytics and Technology teams to deliver integrated data solutions Partner with business product owners to translate analytical requirements into technical designs Skills and experience Demonstrated experience designing, developing, and maintaining enterprise‑scale data pipelines and ETL/ELT processes in cloud or hybrid environments Proficiency in using data integration, orchestration, and transformation tools (e.g. Azure Data Factory, Synapse, Databricks, Power Automate, or similar) Strong command of SQL, Python, or other scripting languages used for data extraction, transformation, and automation Proven ability to optimise data flows for performance, scalability, and cost efficiency, including tuning cloud compute and storage resources Experience implementing and managing data quality frameworks, metadata standards, and lineage tracking within governed environments Minimum 5 years’ experience in data engineering, data integration, or data platform management roles Hands‑on experience with cloud‑based data services (Azure, AWS, or GCP) including data lakes, warehouses, and orchestration tools Strong proficiency in SQL and one or more programming/scripting languages (e.g. Python, R, PowerShell) Experience implementing and maintaining ETL/ELT frameworks, API‑based data integrations, and event‑driven data pipelines Certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Engineer Associate, Google Professional Data Engineer, or AWS Data Analytics Specialty What We Offer Meaningful Impact: Contribute to Australia’s housing solutions while building a world‑class organisational culture Flexible Work: Balanced hybrid arrangement supporting your work‑life integration Growth Opportunities: Be part of our transformation journey with opportunities to shape our people practices Collaborative Culture: Join a mission‑driven team committed to excellence and making a difference We would love to hear from you.
