About the role The Cyber Security Engineer is responsible for strengthening Housing Australia's cyber resilience through the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of enterprise security controls across Microsoft Entra, Defender, and Azure cloud environments. This role leads the Identity and Access Management (IDAM) capability and ensures secure, auditable, and compliant access to Housing Australia's information platforms, services and data. The role combines modern security engineering and automation practices to enable proactive threat detection, effective incident response, and measurable improvements in the organisation's cyber and information security posture. Key responsibilities Working with the Solution Architect, define an identity reference architecture and design principles to inform the configuration, provisioning, deprovisioning, and ongoing lifecycle management of user and service identities across platforms Own and manage Housing Australia's identity governance framework across Microsoft Entra ID, ensuring secure provisioning, lifecycle management, and access certification Design and maintain policies for role-based access control (RBAC), conditional access, and privileged identity management (PIM), balancing cyber security with user productivity Configure, manage, and optimise Microsoft Defender suite (Defender for Endpoint, Identity, Cloud Apps, Cloud, and Office 365) Correlate and investigate alerts across Entra ID, Defender, Intune, and Azure resources, providing detailed technical root cause and remediation Work with the Security Operations Centre (SOC) to enhance incident detection rules, threat hunting queries (KQL), and response automation (SOAR) Collaborate with Operations and DevSecOps teams to integrate security controls into CI/CD pipelines, containers, and infrastructure-as-code deployments Enforce Azure security policies including encryption, secure configuration baselines, key management, and network segmentation Continuously assess and remediate misconfigurations using Defender for Cloud, Azure Policy, and security baselines Leverage PowerShell, Kusto Query Language (KQL), Logic Apps, and Power Automate to build integrated workflows that automate monitoring, threat detection, and incident response Develop automated access reviews, alerting, and policy enforcement processes for privileged or anomalous account activity across Entra ID and Defender environments Ability to assess, respond to, and remediate security incidents in collaboration with a SOC and/or managed service provider Familiarity with Azure governance tools such as Security Center, Sentinel, and Policy Working knowledge of ISO 27001, Essential Eight, ISM, or NIST frameworks Strong technical documentation and cross-team collaboration skills Ability to balance security requirements with operational and business priorities Skills and experience Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Cyber Security, or equivalent experience 3–5 years’ experience in cyber security engineering or cloud security operations Hands‑on experience with Microsoft Entra ID, Defender suite, and Azure security controls Proficiency with PowerShell scripting for security automation and identity management Experience in configuring and maintaining SIEM/SOAR solutions (e.g. Microsoft Sentinel) Knowledge of endpoint protection, vulnerability management, and security hardening practices Understanding of compliance and audit processes in regulated or government environments Experience with incident response, threat intelligence and digital forensics processes What We Offer Meaningful Impact: Contribute to Australia's housing solutions while building a world‑class organisational culture Flexible Work: Balanced hybrid arrangement supporting your work‑life integration Growth Opportunities: Be part of our transformation journey with opportunities to shape our people practices Collaborative Culture: Join a mission‑driven team committed to excellence and making a difference We would love to hear from you.
