The New College Communities presently comprise: New College, the residential community for 247 undergraduate students at UNSW New College Postgraduate Village (NCPV), the residential community for 315 postgraduate and upper-year undergraduate students at UNSW The New College Communities welcomes university students from all backgrounds and faith positions. Over the life of the college, many alumni have contributed enormously to the global academic standing of the University of New South Wales and to leadership across all sectors of society in Australia and internationally. Our two communities are formally affiliated with the University of New South Wales but are operated independently by a not-for-profit company, associated with the Anglican Diocese of Sydney Purpose of the Role The Dean of Studies (DoS) is the academic lead for the communities of New College and New College Postgraduate Village. Appointed by the Board and reporting to the Master of the colleges, the DoS has four key responsibilities: Leadership and development of the academic programs within the colleges, ensuring that the academic support programs offered have a reputation for performing at the best international standards. Strategic and operational leadership of the academic flagship activities of the colleges: specifically the longstanding New College Lectures (NCL) and the Centre for Apologetic Scholarship & Education (CASE). The DoS would report to the NCL trustees and work with the CASE Journal editor to ensure that these activities have an appropriate international reputation for leading Christian scholarship while maintaining relevance and engagement with the resident student communities. To be part of the principal leadership team of the Master, Deans of Residents (DoRs) and the Bursar in guiding college activities. The DoS would be required to work with the Master and Deans of Residents to ensure that the student communities are adequately supervised and willing to reside and act for a DoR in case of extended leave or misadventure. Like the DoRs, it is expected that the DoS will deputise at times for the Master in his absence. To support advancement of the colleges by enunciating the unique academic benefits of our college environments as the best in university living. Specific responsibilities Monitoring and reporting of resident student academic progress and development. Leading and developing strong academic support programs for student residents. Supervising the Academic Tutor teams across both colleges. Coordinating the scholarships program of the colleges and, in collaboration with the DoRs, recommend to the Master worthy recipients and their appropriate levels of support. Enunciating the unique benefits of the strong academic support programs available to student residents. Community Supervision and Support Supporting the DoRs in those pastoral aspects requiring academic support. Working with the Master and DoRs to ensure discipline is maintained within the residential communities. Specifically, there is a senior supervisory staff duty roster shared by the Master, DoRs and the DoS which operates on weekends. Senior staff are rostered on rota to be on-call in case of critical incident. Deputising for the Master in his absence on a rota agreed with the Master and the Deans of Residents. Contributing to Christian ministry in the building under the leadership of the Master and in collaboration with the DoRs. Christian Scholarship Acting as secretary and research officer for the New College Lectures Trustees. Leading development of the Centre for Apologetic Scholarship and Education (CASE) towards publication of quality editions of the CASE Journal. Involving the resident student communities in the Christian Scholarship activities of the colleges. Reporting Relationships The DoS is accountable to the Master and through him to the College Board. It is expected that the Dean will work closely with the Master, become part of the senior leadership team, and develop strong professional relationships with other staff. Associated Staff A number of staff will report directly to the DoS, including Senior Academic Tutors, and the CASE Journal Editor. Tutor teams report to the DoS via the Senior Tutors.
