Principal Legal Officer – Queensland Corrective Services The purpose of the Policy and Legal Command is to establish and provide effective organisation-wide legal strategies, frameworks and advice, reflective of wider Queensland Corrective Services (QCS) operational policy development, service requirements and strategic direction. Legal Strategy and Services Group (LSSG) advises on all QCS legal matters across litigation, contracts, and provides legal services and interpretation across a broad spectrum of areas including employment, commercial and administrative law, coronial inquests, personal injury, civil litigation, anti-discrimination and human rights. Focusing on ethics and integrity ensures QCS conducts itself with the highest degree of accountability and compatibility with governing operating and legal frameworks expected of a top tier public safety agency. Primary Accountabilities of the Principal Legal Officer Provide authoritative legal advice (both written and oral) in the various practice areas listed above and in relation to QCS activities which may involve contentious issues, often of a complex and sensitive nature, the subject of litigation or under consideration by the Minister, Commissioner, executive leadership team and other senior officers. Prepare timely advice, reports, correspondence and briefing notes on legal issues including statutory interpretation in relation to QCS activities and the law reform initiatives of external agencies. Liaise with Crown Law and other legal service providers to ensure a consistent, coordinated and effective approach to the provision of legal services involving QCS. Undertake legal research, analysis, review and evaluation to ensure QCS' activities, including its operations and procedures, satisfy public sector standards for accountability and effectiveness. Provide management support including directly supervising and mentoring other legal officers, managing the appropriate allocation of work and monitoring timeframes in the delivery of legal services. Assist to market Legal Strategy and Services' capability and services and contribute to the strengthening of capabilities of QCS staff in legal issues. Assist the Director to identify and make recommendations to the executive leadership team and other senior officers on trends, risks and future opportunities in contemporary and emerging legal issues affecting QCS. The role description provides the minimum requirements for the role. The incumbent may be required to undertake other duties as required outside of these primary accountabilities.
