The Department of Youth Justice and Victim Support has an exciting opportunity to join our Legislation team where you will play a key role in keeping Queensland communities safe. We are actively tackling the complex causes of youth crime and addressing serious repeat offenders, ensuring our systems and services not only meet but anticipate the needs of victims. The Principal Legal Officer provides authoritative advice on complex justice policy issues, develops options, policies, strategies and initiatives to progress the Government’s law reform program, and supervises other team members. What We Do Providing early intervention, statutory Youth Justice, and detention services to ensure that young people are held accountable for their offending behaviour and helping them become responsible members of the community. Providing trauma‑informed support and resources to victims to ensure they can recover and heal, whilst ensuring the voices and experiences of victims are heard and respected. Key Responsibilities Deliver and lead legislative and policy projects in relation to youth justice law and related matters, including consideration of financial implications, developing Cabinet and Cabinet Budget Review Committee submissions, preparing legislation products such as drafting instructions for bills or regulations, explanatory notes and other Cabinet and Parliamentary supporting documentation, and supporting the Parliamentary committee and debate process. Research, analyse and provide strategic policy advice to the Minister, the Director‑General, other State Government departments and Commonwealth agencies on matters relevant to youth justice. Prepare submissions, briefs, ministerial and departmental correspondence, answers to parliamentary Questions on Notice, and briefing notes on Cabinet Submissions. Build strong partnerships, negotiate and work collaboratively with relevant professional organisations and community groups, central agencies, other departments and statutory offices, and state and territory counterparts on policy matters to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes. Supervise and mentor legal and policy officers. Represent the department in inter‑departmental and inter‑agency meetings and working groups and appear as a witness in Parliamentary Committee hearings on portfolio bills as required. Demonstrate cultural capability and/or commitment to developing cultural capability to ensure an inclusive culture that aligns with the Human Rights Act 2019 and supports departmental programmes and community partnerships aimed at preserving cultural connections for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Applications remain current for 12 months.
