About the Victorian Perinatal Autopsy Service (VPAS) VPAS is a collaboration between the Women’s (Lead service), Monash Medical Centre and Mercy Hospital for Women (and their associated laboratory services). VPAS provides perinatal autopsies for the Victorian community. A key part of our VPAS team are the Perinatal Autopsy Coordinator team. This group coordinate the autopsies by supporting clinical referrers and laboratory teams receiving the autopsy. They also provide information to families who have decided to have an autopsy for their baby. The VPAS team, based at the Women’s, is responsible for the governance of the service, and ensuring consistent standards of practice and expertise for the clinical investigation of perinatal deaths across the state. About the role As one of the VPAS Perinatal Autopsy Coordinator’s (PAC) you will help to reduce barriers to autopsy by supporting clinicians referring a baby for autopsy, and making the practical arrangements required between referring hospitals, mortuary transport/ funeral providers, and the pathology laboratories. You will also provide support and information to families who decide to have an autopsy for their baby. Key Responsibilities Work collaboratively with other VPAS administrative and laboratory staff to coordinate perinatal autopsies from around Victoria Provide information and advice to clinical referrers about issues related to perinatal autopsy, accepting perinatal autopsy referrals, collating the required clinical information and coordinating the process of arranging transport to autopsy Provide advice and information to families who have consented for an autopsy for their baby Support the ongoing development of the VPAS database and utilise this and other digital tools to track and record autopsy data Participate in service evaluation and support systemwide capacity-building activities and clinical education While perinatal autopsy can at times be a confronting environment to work in, this role provides a wonderful opportunity to support clinicians, laboratory staff and families during a difficult time. Investigating perinatal deaths assists bereaved families in understanding their loss and contributes to improving the health of future mothers and babies. About you You will be someone who is comfortable working within the sensitive environment of perinatal death, and are able to maintain a calm and professional demeanour in challenging situations. You’ll have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build and maintain strong, collaborative working relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders. You’ll bring with you: AHPRA Registration as a Division 1 Nurse or Midwife and relevant clinical experience in neonatal nursing, midwifery, anatomical pathology etc; OR Equivalent Allied Health registration and experience (Social Worker, Genetic Counseller etc) The ability to plan, prioritise and time manage in a challenging operational environment A can-do attitude, you show initiative and look out for other members of the team who may need support Experience in working effectively and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team Our benefits At the Women’s you will enjoy a culture that is collaborative, supportive and passionate about learning.
