Senior Adviser, Financial Crime Governance and Oversight Join to apply for the Senior Adviser, Financial Crime Governance and Oversight role at Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer We are seeking an experienced financial crime professional to join our Financial Crime Governance and Oversight team in Sydney. In this role, you will support the Senior Manager, Financial Crime Governance & Oversight in designing, maintaining and operating the governance, oversight and reporting that underpin the firm's financial crime risk management framework, including AML/CTF and sanctions. You'll work closely with global stakeholders, leveraging your expertise to interpret complex regulations, develop training programs, and drive continuous improvement. What you’ll do Conduct ongoing governance oversight of the Australia AML/CTF program, monitoring adherence to policies, procedures, and regulatory obligations across the firm. Proactively identify financial crime compliance issues, control deficiencies, and emerging risks through independent reviews and assessments and recommending enhancements to the Senior Manager, Financial Crime Governance and Oversight. Maintain and update the financial crime obligations library, ensuring all regulatory requirements are accurately documented and monitored for compliance. Monitor the implementation and effectiveness of financial crime policies and procedures, escalating deficiencies and tracking remediation activities. Monitor and analyse emerging financial crime regulations and industry developments. Prepare regulatory intelligence briefings and impact assessments on legislative and regulatory changes, providing actionable recommendations to stakeholders. Maintain current knowledge of AUSTRAC expectations and industry best practices. Support the introduction and maintenance of the firm's financial crime training program by identifying training needs based on assurance findings, regulatory changes, and risk assessments. Prepare comprehensive reports on financial crime governance activities, control testing results, and compliance metrics for senior management and governance committees. Maintain accurate and comprehensive documentation of all governance, oversight, and advisory activities. Utilise data analytics and reporting tools to identify trends, measure control effectiveness, and support evidence-based decision‑making. Contribute to the continuous improvement of the Australia AML/CTF program by identifying opportunities to enhance efficiency, effectiveness, and risk mitigation. Foster collaborative working relationships within the global financial crime team, contributing to a high‑performance culture aligned with firm values. What you’ll bring Minimum 3 years' experience in financial crime compliance or risk Proven governance, oversight, and monitoring experience Degree in law, business, or related field (preferred) Strong knowledge of AML/CTF regulations, sanctions, and risk management Ability to interpret complex regulations and provide practical guidance Skilled in regulatory analysis and preparing impact assessments Excellent analytical and written communication skills Proficiency with data analytics tools for compliance monitoring Strong organisational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities Collaborative team player with global stakeholder engagement experience High integrity and sound judgement in handling confidential information What you can expect from us We're a world leading international law firm with a global team of over 6,000 professionals across 26 offices.
