First Nations Engagement and Project Lead As an organisation, the AFL works tirelessly in all states and at all levels to enhance and grow the game – from grassroots to elite. We put on the game, deliver important events, communicate with our fans, run community programmes, develop coaches and umpires, collaborate with partners, delight members, support clubs and so much more. Our common goal is to progress the game for everyone to love and connect with Australia’s game. About The Role This is a critical role for the AFL industry and is responsible for supporting the development and delivery of strategies that promote First Nations engagement and inclusion within the AFL industry. The role is dedicated to creating a pathway for First Nations players to transition from the game into the industry, aligning with the AFL’s First Nations Strategy, and is assigned to a First Nations AFL/AFLW past player. Identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational requirement. Key Relationships First Nations Advisory Committee (sub‑committee of the AFL Commission) AFL and AFLW First Nations Players AFL Clubs and industry representatives First Nations community organisations Government agencies AFL Senior leaders Key Accountabilities Provide support on strategic direction, advocacy, and advice across AFL functions to embed and advance the First Nations Strategy. Support the reporting and monitoring of the workstreams within the First Nations Strategy. Assist with partnership and engagement opportunities with AFL Clubs and First Nations players to champion initiatives that address racism and strengthen cultural safety. Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders to drive implementation of the strategy aligning with AFL priorities. Collaborate within the First Nations Engagement and Inclusion Team to support strategic priorities and day‑to‑day activities ensuring alignment with organisational goals. Provide project management support on initiatives relating to cultural safety and awareness within the AFL industry, including education programmes. Provide cultural leadership, advice and support to the AFL First Nations Network, fostering connection, collaboration and empowerment. Core Competencies Stakeholder Engagement: Ability to engage, influence and collaborate with a range of key stakeholders internally and externally. Understanding of First Nation communities: Deep awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures and issues, and demonstrated ability to engage with communities. Project Development and Delivery: Experience developing, implementing and directing First Nations and Inclusion programmes that effect change. Getting stuff done: Ability to execute initiatives on time, within budget and to agreed KPIs. Communication skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a strong understanding of communication in engaging people and communities. Understanding of AFL: Experience in the AFL industry or profound connection to football and proven ability in managing related social programmes.
