Passion for talent attraction and connecting the right person to the right role About the Role This position is based in the Centre for Population Genomics (CPG), a joint initiative of the Garvan Institute of Medical Research (Garvan) in Sydney and the Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI) in Melbourne. The Centre is an impact‑focused, highly collaborative team that includes data analysts, software engineers, project managers, and community specialists. Together, we focus on realising the potential of genomic data to improve disease diagnosis and treatment for all Australians, through the establishment of respectful partnerships with diverse communities, the collection and analysis of genomic data at a transformative scale, and the development of cutting‑edge tools and resources. THE OPPORTUNITY We are seeking a Data Product Owner or similar Data Professional to join the Population Genomics team at the Centre for Population Genomics. You will provide expert solution design, architectural guidance and perform technical analysis across data platforms within the health and medical research space. You will work closely with OurDNA, Program Management and Software teams. The Data Product Owner will develop and manage the data products for the current needs of the OurDNA project, such as the participant recruitment workflow, and for future requirements, like return of results and individual level data access workflows. You will help define the current state of the OurDNA data products and design our scale‑up data architecture aligning to the long‑term goals of the OurDNA project. You will work closely with the Software team to design integration solutions for a diverse range of data sources including Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), customised participant portal, our own CPG infrastructure and Pathology Labs so that the OurDNA and Population Genomics teams have a coherent and actionable picture of the OurDNA participant information and genomic data. This will require you to work closely with both the Population Genomics and OurDNA teams to determine current and future requirements from both a scientific analysis and operations management perspective. You will also be in direct contact with external vendors to ensure any architectural decisions are consistent and actionable. Success in this role requires a curious person with a strong data engineering or research background who enjoys both the technical challenge as well as working closely with a diverse team of developers and users. You will be passionate about delivering user‑centric solutions that work within our existing platforms. This individual will relish the challenge of developing practical and efficient solutions accepted by varied stakeholders. At CPG, we're looking for someone who is curious and motivated to use their technical skillset to make a meaningful contribution to society. The CPG is committed to supporting the responsible, progressive, inclusive and safe sharing of genomic and health data to drive medical research and improve human health. This individual will ensure that the CPG's policies and practices reflect our data management values (respecting participants, protecting genomic and health information and data sharing) and that we comply with relevant institutional policies, national regulations and international data sharing frameworks. Salary Up to $133,000 + 12% superannuation + salary packaging (depending on experience). Employment Type 2‑year fixed‑term. SNAPSHOT OF BENEFITS Generous salary packaging to save you income tax on your wages thereby boosting your monthly take‑home pay (max. $15,900 general expenses + $2,650 meals / accom). Ample opportunities for on‑going training and development. Stimulating, diverse and highly international research environment. Flexible work arrangements e.g. start / finish times. 18 weeks paid parental leave for both parents including paid superannuation. A range of additional leave types to meet your personal needs including cultural leave, conference leave, community service and study leave. Discounted Health Insurance. Lifestyle discounts with our community partners. WHAT YOU WILL DO ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Overarching responsibility for the data products of the OurDNA program, specifically around participant recruitment and genomic data analysis workflows. Design of data solutions, in collaboration with the OurDNA and Software teams, for end‑to‑end data workflows from pathology labs and CRMs to metadata management and business intelligence tools. Ensuring that data from under‑represented and marginalised groups is treated with the utmost respect and is securely handled at all stages. Develop specific research data governance policies, in conjunction with the CPG Data Governance Officer. Managing data flow and coordination across the project through effective vendor management and collaboration. Facilitate data product management decisions across teams to ensure solutions are consistent, sustainable, flexible and readily adopted. Capture requirements from a range of technical and non‑technical stakeholders, including scientists, software engineers and project managers. Articulate data governance and management best practice to technical and non‑technical audiences. Collaborate on technical decision making, planning, implementing and documenting data products and pipelines with the relevant teams. ABOUT YOU KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED 5 years minimum experience in data product ownership, data engineering, solution design or similar role. Ability to collect and translate design and business logic requirements into technical solutions across backend, APIs, UIs, workflows and data integrations. Ability to design data products and workflows that are reliable and scalable and can adopt changes and new requirements without complete re‑architecting.
