As part of the Group’s Digital and Customer Crew within the CommSec Practice, the Staff Engineer – Chapter Lead will play a pivotal role in Australia’s largest online retail stockbroker, CommSec. This high‑visibility platform supports a diverse investor base and employs a range of technologies. The role involves leading a high‑performing, multi‑level team of software engineers, consulting on product and feature design, and providing leadership and support to deliver key products and solutions. Lead and inspire a team of full stack engineers (web + backend), fostering a culture of engineering excellence and continuous learning. Champion best practices in mobile and backend development, including architecture, testing, CI/CD, and performance optimisation. Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to deliver high‑impact features and improvements to the CommSec platform. Drive technical strategy and architectural decisions across mobile and backend systems, ensuring scalability, maintainability, and security. Mentor and coach engineers, helping them grow in their careers and contribute meaningfully to our mission. Promote a culture of innovation, inclusion, and psychological safety within the team. Partner with stakeholders across product, design, and operations to align on goals and deliver exceptional customer outcomes. Tech Skills Frontend: React and Redux are preferred, with MicroFrontend architecture in use. Backend: .NET Core (C#), Java, RESTful APIs, GraphQL, and event‑driven systems. Databases: PostgreSQL, SQL Server, DynamoDB, MongoDB. Cloud & Infrastructure: AWS is preferred, with experience in Azure and GCP also valued. Infrastructure as Code tools like Terraform and CloudFormation are in use. CI/CD & Testing: GitHub Actions, Octopus Deploy, Jenkins, and comprehensive testing frameworks (unit, integration, contract, E2E). Observability & SRE: Tools such as Observe, Grafana, and Prometheus are used. Strong SRE practices including SLIs/SLOs, runbooks, and incident management are expected. Proficiency in monitoring, alerting, and performance tuning for both web and backend systems. Ability to drive operational excellence and ensure high availability and reliability of mission‑critical services.
