This senior role is ideal for an experienced and passionate Radiographer with a strong background in CT, NHS experience, and proven leadership in clinical practice. As Superintendent Radiographer you will: Take responsibility for service delivery, radiographer training, governance and protocol development Oversee operations across 6 CT scanners (Siemens X.ceed, Siemens Drive, Aquilion One Prism, and Canon Prime SP) Join a team of 3 operational Superintendent Radiographers, sharing responsibility for day-to-day management of the CT service and providing line management duties Based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, working in the state-of-the-art Imaging facility in the Louisa Martindale Building (opened May 2023) Expand your clinical, operational, and leadership expertise within a supportive and progressive team Main duties of the job Role Summary Day to day management of the CT service at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton Manage staff, resources, and workflow Manage and undertake staff training for rotational radiographers in CT Perform CT clinical duties to the highest standard, including interventional CT, Cardiac and Colonography Ensure departmental adherence to regulations (IR(ME)R, IRR) and UHSussex policy/guidelines/protocols Actively participate as a member of the multi-disciplinary team About us At UHSussex (UHSx), diversity is our strength and we want you to feel included to help us always put the Patient First. Communication Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication using a variety of media Communicates a range of numerical and factual information effectively with a range of professional groups Discuss and present complex issues effectively, often of a sensitive or contentious nature Create and maintain appropriate records/systems and procedures Promote good communication and shared understanding between the department, referring teams and with primary care, encouraging a whole system approach Be assertive as to provide effective organisation prioritising of clinical work and leadership Communicate effectively with patients to enable them to relax, relieve their anxiety and to aid co-operation in sometimes stressful environments/situations Communicate complex information to patients in a sensitive and professional manner Liaise with appointment staff regarding allocation of appointments Service Delivery and Improvement To be responsible for management and co‑ordination of a high quality, professional CT service at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton Lead the CT team Influence policy development and procedures locally, integrating methodologies into everyday working Analyse and respond to situations locally Support the development of business plans as appropriate Perform risk assessments, delegate the task of risk assessment, analyse the result and take appropriate remedial management action Ability to meet strict deadlines against competing targets, providing regular electronic and written complex reports on progress as required, adapting these to suit multiple audiences Monitors targets and objectives set with other staff and ensure remedial action is taken to achieve targets and goals, resetting and reviewing targets in response to changing demands on services Manage the organisation and operation of an efficient CT imaging service capable of meeting demand by ensuring effective working relationships with all other hospital departments, and timely reporting of scans. Manage audit, clinical governance plans and service improvement within the imaging service Manage a patient‑focussed imaging service in a caring environment including working within the Data Protection Act and Caldicott Guidelines to maintain and protect patient confidentiality Manage the CT QA system and monitor its set standards, including maintaining excellent clinical standards of all staff regardless of current position Guided by principles and broad occupational policies and regulations Attend and actively participate in relevant departmental meetings and promote team building at managerial and clinical levels To be responsible for the availability and regular maintenance of equipment and to advise the Lead Superintendent Radiographer of faults and defects as appropriate if they impact on service delivery. Strive to maintain maximum capacity for the service, minimising down time by co‑ordinating scheduled service days, meetings and physics as far as reasonably possible Represent the Department of Imaging in internal and external meetings, negotiating on behalf of the department for resources required Provide the Lead Superintendent Radiographer with regular reports on workloads, waiting times and all other relevant issues To undertake other duties, commensurate with grade, assigned by the Lead Superintendent Radiographer To ensure all patients are scanned in a timely manner in line with department, Trust and National Guidance and waiting times standards Actively participate in clinical governance groups e.g. Clinical Audit group, Patient Experience Group Plan and organise activities which require the formulation and adjustment of strategies Excellent organisational and interpersonal skills Time management skills, ensuring the action of all activities within identified timescales Skilled and flexible negotiation skills in situations that might be contentious and volatile Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills Analytical and numeracy skills. Able to make judgements involving situations requiring the comparison of a range of options Build capacity for improvement amongst staff encouraging an open and collaborative approach to improvement To be accountable for one’s own professional actions and the actions of the staff for whom the post holder is responsible in line with professional guidelines To ensure scanning protocols, codes of practice and the Health and Safety at Work Act are understood by staff and adhered to thereby ensuring the safe use of equipment and reporting of H&S, equipment issues and clinical incidents to relevant staff Use advanced clinical experience, knowledge and expertise to help assess, develop and implement specialist working practices and to propose changes and/or draft imaging and departmental policies and procedures Responsible for policy implementation and service development for the CT service To effectively develop and sustain partnership working with consultants, clinicians, nursing staff, allied professions, commissioners and the multidisciplinary team to ensure high‑quality, modern imaging services are delivered to patients and key performance targets are delivered To negotiate sensitively with children in a manner appropriate to their age and stage of development. To communicate complex patient preparation and examination information to carers and children. To instruct relatives and carers in methods of immobilisation, ensuring their safety and radiation protection at all times To perform other tasks and duties as deemed reasonable in discussion with the lead superintendent radiographer and consultant and Trust management Undertake research, surveys, and audit within area of responsibility, providing evidence-based information as appropriate Co‑ordinate the collection, analysis, and presentation of appropriate quantitative and qualitative data, overseeing data collection activities as required Ensure the testing of proposed changes to service prior to implementation Develop and implement changes to departmental running, e.g. protocols, appointment letters and advice leaflets Support any Service Improvement work taking active participation in data collection, process mapping and meetings as required Professional qualification in Diagnostic Radiography or equivalent level of study Registered with the Health Professions Council Extensive CT experience as a senior member of a clinical service Recent NHS experience at a senior level Understands competing priorities of colleagues and other staff Uses advanced knowledge of clinical environment to identify the need for change and manages the change process required, adapting as necessary to individual circumstances Understands the impact change will have Evidence of appropriate Continued Professional Development Attend appropriate courses to maintain skills and fulfil mandatory requirements. Maintain awareness of developments within radiography and be responsible for ensuring this is cascaded through the clinical team Specialist knowledge in CT imaging supported by theoretical knowledge and relevant practical experience Able to work in situations with frequent requirement for concentration with unpredictable work patterns and prioritises own workload accordingly Deals with occasional exposure to highly distressing or highly emotional circumstances and provides active support and advice to other frontline staff People Management and Development Strong Management ability and line manager for all clinical (but non‑medical) staff in CT and in the wider Imaging team outside of CT Proven ability to develop teams in the workplace Implement and manage recruitment processes as appropriate Liaise with radiologists to maximise their availability for sessions in the CT service. Work cooperatively with them to ensure timely access to interventional and Cardiac CT Work as a team leader, managing all the needs of the team, maintaining credibility in managerial and specialised clinical skills Organise and supervise staff, duty rotas and the maintenance of the CT service taking corrective action as appropriate, reorganising the rotas and bookings as appropriate To operationally manage staff in the Imaging department, and be responsible for appraisal, discipline, attendance and development of the team Support the appropriate clinical training of teams as required Ensure the radiographers in the CT service are suitably trained to maintain high standards of imaging and patient care in the role holder’s absence. This ensures the service is not compromised in any way by the absence of the post holder Undergo regular statutory training (e.g. manual handling, fire) as appropriate Undertake promotion of area of responsibility To ensure the achievement of departmental objectives in the training of radiographers, student radiographers, and other staff within the Imaging department.
