Our client, a leading manufacturer keeping Australia running through the production of specialised fuel transport vehicles, is seeking a motivated Junior Design Engineer to join their growing engineering team. This role is ideal for someone early in their career with strong SolidWorks and CAD capability, a can‑do attitude, and 1–2 years’ experience in the heavy vehicle or similar heavy industry manufacturing. Candidates based in Melbourne’s southeastern suburbs who can start immediately or before Christmas are strongly encouraged to apply. About the Role The Design Engineer will support key engineering and administrative functions, gaining exposure across design, documentation, data management, and process improvement. This position is structured to build patience, attention to detail, and strong critical thinking, forming a solid foundation for a long‑term engineering career. Key Responsibilities Perform essential engineering administration, including photo records, documentation, nameplates and product data archiving Create and update 3D CAD models, manufacturing drawings, technical specifications and BOMs for tanker products Manage design data and administer SolidWorks PDM to ensure accurate and organised records Provide technical support to internal teams including Sales, Production, Procurement and Aftermarket, as well as clients and suppliers Learn tanker product design and engineering processes, identifying ways to streamline workflows and reduce engineering waste Use technology creatively (AI tools, Python scripting, Excel macros, SolidWorks API) to automate tasks and improve productivity Skills & Experience Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (minimum) Around 2 years’ experience in a heavy vehicle or relevant design‑for‑manufacturing environment Experience in truck, trailer or heavy vehicle industries will be highly regarded Strong SolidWorks CAD capability (CSWP or equivalent experience) Experience with SolidWorks API for macros and automated workflows SolidWorks PDM Standard editing/administration experience highly regarded FEA/static stress analysis experience AutoCAD aptitude for 2D drafting Programming/scripting proficiency in Python, VBA and Excel Macros Experience with generative AI tools preferred Familiarity with project/task tools such as Monday.com or Asana Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal Positive attitude: adaptable, detail‑oriented, collaborative and proactive Note for applicants: Shortlisted candidates will be required to complete a 90‑minute SolidWorks test to assess modelling capability, design thinking and attention to detail.
