Clinical Technologist The closing date is 07 December 2025 An exciting opportunity for 2 motivated Band 5 Clinical Technologists to join our Anaesthetics and Theatre Technical Services team in delivering Clinical Engineering services to the Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Clinical Engineering is primarily concerned with providing medical device management services in terms of procurement, repair, calibration and maintenance to a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic medical equipment across the Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. It is the responsibility of Clinical Engineering to ensure equipment operates effectively and safely with a minimum of downtime. Clinical equipment covered incorporates electrical, electronic, mechanical, computer software and medical gas systems. The department works to ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 13485:2016 quality standards and is responsible for the management of over 60,000 medical devices used across the hospital and in the community throughout East Anglia. The posts are one of a number within the Anaesthetics and Theatre Technical Services section of Clinical Engineering. The Anaesthetics and Theatre Technical Services section provides servicing and repair support to varied patient support equipment encompassing high‑dependency/intensive care ventilators and anaesthetic machines, equipment which use medical gases including suction, flowmeters and nebulisers, and high‑dependency equipment within the Theatre environment. Main duties of the job Applicants should possess HNC/HND/Relevant degree or the equivalent level of knowledge/experience in electrical/electronic/mechanical engineering. In the event of candidates not meeting the required qualifications/experience or skill at Band 5 criteria in the first instance, consideration will be given to candidates for Annex 21 under NHS terms and Conditions of Service Handbook and be expected to undertake a full training program. Main Duties You will work in a busy team undertaking a wide range of technical engineering work within the Clinical Engineering department. You will carry out scheduled preventive maintenance, servicing, repair, calibration, safety and acceptance testing on a wide range of medical devices. You will be required to work to extremely high standards of workmanship, safety and accountability within a quality management system and will be expected to work with a high degree of autonomy. You will be required to liaise with clinical and technical staff to identify faults and repair equipment, including working in all clinical areas and with manufacturers. This post also provides maintenance and repair services to healthcare providers across remote sites and requires a driving licence. The post holder will oversee trainee medical technical staff and provide direction. Person Specification Qualifications HNC/HND/BEng/BSc in Electronics/Electrical or Mechanical engineering or a scientific subject or other equivalent combination of qualifications and knowledge Member of an appropriate professional institute Voluntary member of Clinical Technologists register Experience Experience of electronic and electromechanical systems Extensive practical experience of Mechanical and electromechanical engineering workshop practices and techniques, equivalent of independent practice including preventive maintenance, servicing, inspection, repair, calibration, quality control, safety, acceptance testing and procurement Experience of working with the general public Knowledge and operation of a quality management system such as ISO 9001:2015, ISO 13485:2016 etc Experience of fault finding in Electronic/Electromechanical/Pneumatic systems Specialist training on the maintenance and repair of a range of medical devices. Knowledge Awareness of the need to demonstrate a professional appearance and behaviour. Understands the importance of confidentiality and data protection. Knowledge of a broad range of scientific principles General knowledge of Electrical/Mechanical workshop practice Knowledge of medical device operation and management Able to use Excel, Word etc to set up documents and spreadsheets and extract information, use equipment management database. Working knowledge of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines (e.g. ISO 9001 2000, BSI standards, RIDDOR, MDA/MHRA guidance, Health and Safety, COSHH) Skills Well‑developed verbal and written and communication skills Well‑developed interpersonal skills – able to liaise effectively with a wide range of people including medical staff, patients and relatives. Capable of working as part of a multi‑disciplinary team Good organisational skills with the ability to prioritise a demanding workload Use of fine tools for equipment adjustment, calibration or repair Able to deal with occasional distressing circumstances when working in clinical areas (e.g. when visiting wards and theatres fault finding on patient‑connected equipment). Able to prioritise and manage own work Able to exercise own initiative when dealing with issues within own specialist area of competence. Full valid driving licence required as will need to drive Trust‑owned vehicle (minimum 6 months driving experience post achieving a full licence) Able to communicate complex information across professional boundaries Able to concentrate frequently when subject to unpredictable working patterns.
