Volunteer to be a Peer CARE Companion in Community Cairns Roses in the Ocean are currently seeking individuals with a lived experience of suicide to volunteer with our Peer CARE Companion in Community model in the Cairns community. Peer CARE Companion in Community is a face‑to‑face, community‑based suicide prevention service that provides a safe place for people to connect with our Peer CARE Companions who share a similar lived experience. What a lived experience of suicide includes Having experienced suicidal thoughts Survived a suicide attempt Supported a loved one through a suicidal crisis Been bereaved by suicide Role and responsibilities Meet people where they are at locally and in community Provide support that may vary from meeting in a community setting, having a coffee, supporting travel to additional supports, going for a walk or connecting for a chat Listen deeply and let people talk about their experiences Qualities we look for Comfortable talking about suicide Comfortable sitting with another person’s lived experience and their feelings and emotions Ability to listen deeply Training provided Touchpoints Workshop (4.5 hours) Self‑paced online modules (4–6 hours) Peer CARE Companion Workshop (6.5 hours) Service Induction and some practice calls (3 hours) Ongoing support and debriefing, group co‑reflection sessions, and professional development opportunities Commitment Regular – more than 6 months. After training, the minimum time required is approximately 3 hours per month at a time and location that best suits you and our service users. You have control of your own availability.
