Education Assistant – Special Needs Department of Education, Western Australia Position : Permanent part‑time (0.6 FTE) commencing Term 1, 2026 Spearwood Alternative School (SAS) has a student population of just under 100 students from kindergarten to year 6. The school’s ethos is “Education Through Community: Community Through Education,” attracting families from across the region. The grounds include extensive playing spaces and edible gardens that serve as living classrooms. A comprehensive curriculum is centred on sustainable education and social activism, with learner‑centred instruction delivered by passionate teachers who work democratically with the wider school community. SAS is therefore looking for an Education Assistant who will support the implementation of specialised education programmes and help maintain a supportive, inclusive learning environment that meets the diverse needs of its students. Key Responsibilities Assist the teacher with the general care and wellbeing of students and the maintenance of the learning environment. Support the implementation of evidence‑based teaching and behaviour strategies. Collaborate with teachers, parents, staff and the wider community to build positive relationships. Assume a supportive role in special education, therapy, occupational and/or physiotherapy programmes as required. Communicate effectively with students, parents and professionals regarding student needs and programme progress. Essential Qualifications and Experience Excellent interpersonal, communication and organisational skills. Calm, positive and professional manner, capable of working well under pressure and as part of a team. Knowledge and experience with evidence‑based techniques for learning and behaviour, and familiarity with disabilities such as Autism Spectrum Disorder. Australian or New Zealand citizenship, permanent residency, or a valid visa with relevant work rights. Valid Working With Children Check prior to employment. Consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and possession of a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit. A two‑page statement responding to the selection criteria listed in the Job Description Form, addressing the ability to communicate with students with special needs, work as part of a team, organise and deliver educational programmes, assist teachers or therapists, and understanding of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
