The Role Busselton SHS is seeking an innovative and motivated Education Assistant – Auslan to join our team The Education Assistant – Auslan should assist with the communicative needs of Deaf or Hard of Hearing students using Auslan or another sign language or sign system, relevant to the child’s mode of communication. The successful applicant will assist teachers in delivering planned education programs, encouraging a supportive and inclusive learning environment. Under teacher direction, the successful applicant will aid in the implementation of specialised education programs and assist in the delivery of specific Individual Education Programs of Deaf or Hard of Hearing students. As required, you will have the opportunity to provide feedback on education and therapy programs and participate in the evaluation process relating to the achievement of goals. As an Auslan Education Assistant, you would be an Auslan interpreter in a range of secondary classroom settings and subjects. You may also interpret events such as school camps, theatre performances and assemblies. Auslan Education Assistants provide support to the classroom, school, and community to ensure high quality learning programs are provided in an inclusive learning environment. In addition, you should assist students to understand the education programs through teacher directed tutoring, such as assisting the student working on set tasks, clarifying instructions, supporting therapy, and personal and social goals. The successful applicant would be a part of a supportive and experienced team and will liaise with staff to advocate for students’ accessibility needs to provide the best possible learning outcomes. The successful applicant will ideally have previous experience working as an Auslan interpreter, and possess competency in interpreting from English to Auslan, as well as Auslan to English. Having connection to, or involvement with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community would be highly regarded. The successful applicant would ideally work collaboratively in a team and build positive relationships with staff and students. They should possess flexibility, professionalism, and a “can do” attitude.
