Youth Worker - Southport Flexible School Youth Worker - Southport Flexible School Continuing, Full-Time Start: As soon as can be negotiated Previous applicants need not apply ABOUT THE ORGANISATION: Southport Flexible School is a Catholic School in the Edmund Rice tradition. There are 21 Flexible Schools throughout Australia who offer a full-time and multiyear secondary education program for young people who have disengaged from mainstream schooling. Enrolled young people may express a broad range of complex education and social needs and flexible schools respond with a variety of flexible and innovative teaching and learning practices including vocational planning and the development of social connectedness. The purpose of a flexible school is to provide young people with a varied and holistic set of learning experiences supporting them to identify and pursue an individual transition to adulthood, employment, further education and training and social connectedness. ABOUT THE ROLE The role of the Youth Worker within our school is to support, design and develop engagement, wellbeing and social inclusion responses and program activities for the school that directly enhance the engagement of the young people that attend the school. All program activities complement the educational programs on offer and support the engagement of young people's learning at the school. Some of these programs include outdoor adventure-based learning, sports and self-reflection workshops. The typical duties of the role may include: Supporting effective learning and teaching programs for young people in both middle and senior phases of secondary education. Promote and support the physical health and emotional wellbeing of the young people. Contributing to the development and implementation of the FLC’s objectives and planning. Contributing to the maintenance of a supportive and inclusive school environment. Build relationships and collaborate with the school, staff, students and their families in relation to planning, actions and achieving outcomes. Support young people to engage with relevant external agencies through appropriate referral pathways and stakeholder meetings. Key Responsibilities include: Knowledge and understanding of key issues for contemporary youth culture to be able to identify potential barriers impacting on young people and their families in the wider community Ability to identify barriers to young people engaging in activities and adapt programs accordingly Promote the values and principles of the school to ensure inclusion, empowerment and youth development when developing and implementing program activities Commitment to work under the four principles of operation, Respect, Safe and Legal, Honesty and Participation to establish a “common ground” to resolve conflict, negotiate learning, recognise rights, where responsibilities and consequences are modelled and explored ABOUT YOU Understanding of and commitment to the values of a Catholic educational system of schools in the Edmund Rice tradition. Able to demonstrate the high-level communication, collaboration and interpersonal skills necessary to be successful in a complex and layered organisational structure. Ability to diagnose problems, foresee potential issues and devise appropriate responses. Ability to lead, work in, and collaborate across teams with integrity and humility. Enthusiasm and excitement for working with disengaged youth. Minimal Certificate IV qualification desirably in a youth or human services sector and/or the ability to obtain one within the first 12 months of employment. Previous experience in a youth or human services sector. Applicants must hold or have the ability to attain a current Blue Card before commencement as per the No Card No Start Blue Card system legislation. Ability to work within the four principles of Honest, Participation, Respect and Safe and Legal. Proficient computer literacy including the ability to learn various computer software systems and ability to train and support other staff. Local travel is a requirement of this position therefore it is a requirement that the applicant hold a current 'C' driver's license.
