Working closely with faculties, academics and professional staff, the role advances UNSW’s commitment to educational excellence and inclusive, future-focused curriculum design. This position provides strategic leadership and specialist expertise in Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and inclusive teaching. It drives initiatives that embed accessibility, inclusive pedagogy and equitable curriculum design across the University, ensuring inclusion remains central to UNSW’s Progress for All strategy. By partnering with faculties and education support teams, the Senior Inclusive Educational Designer promotes curriculum design that removes barriers to learning, enriches student experiences and strengthens staff capability. Reporting to the Lead, Curriculum and Educational Design, the role sits within a small team of Educational Designers. While it does not manage direct reports, it contributes mentorship, quality assurance and strategic direction, and works closely with colleagues across the Division of Education and Student Experience. Specific accountabilities for this role include: Lead and manage initiatives, projects and policies that facilitate and promote proactive adoption of accessible design in ways that enhance inclusion and do not create new barriers for students with disabilities or diverse learning needs. Ensure these run on time and to budget. Provide expert guidance and scaffolded support to academic staff on inclusive teaching practices and pedagogy in reviewing and designing courses and programs. Model and encourage teaching approaches that recognise student diversity in backgrounds, abilities, and learning preferences. Design, develop, deliver and facilitate professional development programs and workshops to build capability in inclusive teaching and UDL among UNSW’s teaching and professional staff. The role will leverage sector-leading initiatives to inform the development of UNSW’s programs. About You: Educational qualifications : Tertiary qualifications in education, instructional design or a related field, or equivalent experience in inclusive teaching design, UDL, curriculum design and educational innovation. Postgraduate study : Postgraduate qualifications in higher education or curriculum design, along with teaching experience, are highly regarded. Inclusive pedagogy expertise : Strong knowledge of inclusive pedagogy and UDL, including familiarity with resources such as CAST UDL 3.0, with demonstrated success applying these principles in higher education. Accessibility standards : Solid understanding of digital accessibility requirements (e.g., WCAG 2.2, DDA, DSE Act, Carer Recognition Act, UNSW DIAP). Accessible content creation : Proven ability to create and assess learning materials for accessibility and advise others on accessible documents, multimedia and online content. Assistive technologies : Experience with accessible technologies and assistive software, and the ability to design or adapt learning activities for students with varied disabilities. Curriculum design : Extensive experience in curriculum design in higher education, including curriculum mapping, reviewing for inclusivity and co-creating accessible learning experiences with academics. Professional development : Experience designing and delivering staff development programs on inclusive teaching, with strong facilitation and presentation skills. Project management : Strong project management capability, with a record of leading educational initiatives, coordinating cross-functional teams and using data to evaluate outcomes. Collaborative leadership : A collaborative leadership style that supports teamwork, innovation and inclusive practice. Communication and relationships : Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to build relationships, influence stakeholders and advocate for inclusive practices. Change management : Experience guiding organisational or cultural change, particularly in teaching or equity-related areas. Learning technologies : Proficiency with higher education technologies (e.g., LMS, authoring tools, multimedia, assistive tech) and understanding of emerging technologies, including AI, for inclusive learning. Commitment to inclusion : Strong commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, with an understanding of the challenges faced by underrepresented student groups. Faculty context awareness : Understanding of faculty constraints (e.g., accreditation, timetabling, assessment security) to effectively integrate and support UDL implementation.
