The Office of Public Prosecutions (OPP) is an independent statutory authority responsible for preparing and conducting criminal prosecutions in Victoria on behalf of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Matters prosecuted by the DPP and the OPP involve serious crimes or matters that are of significance to the fair and effective operation of the Victorian criminal justice system. The OPP consists of the Solicitor for Public Prosecutions and a staff of approximately 475 providing legal and corporate support to the DPP, the Chief Crown Prosecutor and Crown Prosecutors in the exercise of their independent roles in the criminal justice system.

The OPP has an exciting ongoing opportunity at our Geelong office, for a solicitor who has a strong interest in the criminal jurisdictions of the County and Supreme Courts.

The successful incumbent will be responsible for the preparation of moderately complex matters in the County and Supreme Courts of Victoria, with the opportunity to potential work on highly complex matters under the guidance of a Senior Solicitor. You will also instruct Counsel appearing for the Crown in cases and prepare matters for prosecution at committal stage.

The position is based at the OPP's Geelong office which is centrally located at 60/62 Brougham Street, and includes travel to court locations within the Western regions of Victoria. A vehicle and overnight accommodation are provided as required.

About the Role:

• Prepare and instruct counsel in the conduct of moderately complex matters, trials, pleas and other hearings in the County and Supreme Courts.
• Undertake high level research, investigation and analysis of moderately complex issues and provide written and verbal advice as required to external and internal stakeholders to ensure the effective prosecution of cases.
• Ensure that cases are competently, and efficiently prepared and suitable counsel is briefed to properly present cases before the Court.

As an ideal candidate you will have:

• Demonstrated ability preparing litigation of moderately complex matter.
• Thorough knowledge of Criminal Law and Procedure, the Law of Evidence and other relevant legislation.
• High level interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to liaise with relevant stakeholders both internally and externally.
