Base pay range A$94,563.00/yr - A$105,910.00/yr Positions are available in Melbourne, Dandenong, Sydney and Wollongong. Position overview Registrars undertake most case management and interlocutory work previously performed by judges, plus a significant proportion of dispute resolution events. Registrar support staff (CMs, LCMs, SJR Associates) provide direct support to registrars in managing family law caseloads, including specialist lists such as the Evatt List and National Contravention List. The Registrar Support Team Leader oversees registrar support staff under a national structure led by the Director – National Registrar Support. Team Leaders must be proactive, collaborative, and demonstrate strong communication and leadership skills to ensure effective operations locally and nationally. Key Responsibilities and Duties Team Leaders ensure sufficient resources for registrar support, safeguarding efficient handling of family law matters. Resourcing: Manage leave coverage and allocations locally/remotely; collaborate nationally; report to Director; respond to stakeholder requests. Recruitment/Training: Assist with recruitment, induction, onboarding, and training; lead regional training; coordinate IT access; liaise with P&C; support ongoing training schedules and resource updates. Management: Approve leave/timesheets; manage probation; build stakeholder relationships; facilitate training; conduct performance/wellbeing check‑ins; anticipate workload pressures; report on staff performance. Policies/Processes: Maintain knowledge of case management systems and chambers processes; provide advice to ensure compliance with national guidelines. Additional Support: Provide ad hoc legal/administrative support when chambers are short staffed; draft correspondence, prepare reports, manage hearing schedules, engage with databases; support registrars in other registries/regions; candidates may be offered national operations/policy roles. Professional qualifications, competencies and attributes Tertiary qualifications in law or management are desirable but not mandatory. Prior court experience is advantageous. The successful candidate will demonstrate: Exemplary communication, negotiation, interpersonal and relationship‑building skills. Strong analytical, change management and operational skills, focused on exceptional service delivery. Attention to detail and accuracy in written and oral communications. Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively, building positive relationships and handling sensitive information appropriately. Substantial management knowledge and experience leading teams in varied environments. Sound knowledge or ability to acquire knowledge of court procedures, guidelines, policies, and IT systems. Personally, they will be effective communicators and negotiators with proven ability to lead, support and develop their registrar support cohort within a national framework. Selection criteria Strong communication (oral and written) and liaison skills as well as the ability to effectively communicate with people at all levels. Ability to exercise tact and discretion, act impartially and maintain confidentiality at all times. Demonstrated leadership skills and management experience, ideally in a court or public service setting. Demonstrated organisational skills, including the ability to manage several processes at once, attention to detail, excellent time management skills, and planning and problem‑solving skills. Demonstrated working knowledge or capability to quickly acquire a high‑level working knowledge of key internal procedures, guidelines, policies and practices used in the Courts. Sound IT proficiency, including the use of videoconferencing platforms such as Microsoft Teams and Webex, and the ability to learn and adapt to new systems and technology quickly and efficiently. Demonstrated ability to work both autonomously and as a member of a geographically dispersed team with limited direction, and the ability to adapt to changing situations and priorities and participate in collective work practices. Demonstrated understanding and commitment to the application of the Australian Public Service (APS) Values, to abide by the APS Code of Conduct and the ability to comply with the principles of Workplace Diversity and Occupational Health and Safety.
