Job Overview Senior Protection & Control Engineer (Secondary Design) – Network Services Team, CitiPower and Powercor We are expanding our Network Services team in Melbourne and looking for experienced Senior Protection and Control Engineers (Secondary Design) to support a wave of new substation projects across our portfolio. These are full‑time, permanent roles with relocation assistance available for suitable candidates. As a Protection & Control Engineer (Secondary Design), you will deliver expert engineering support across scoping, design, and estimation of substation projects, collaborate closely with internal stakeholders and external clients, lead technical development of the Secondary Design team, champion best‑practice policies and procedures, and drive quality outcomes, critical milestones and strong financial performance. Key Responsibilities Provide specialist engineering design and advice for terminal substations, industrial substations and distributed generation network connections in line with standards, technical manuals, OH&S Act and safety guidelines. Review and continuously improve processes and systems to ensure high productivity, efficiency and quality outcomes, taking into account safety, technical, commercial and environmental factors. Monitors, review and approve engineering solutions and proposals by others, including manufacturer supplied drawings, in accordance with agreed standards. Assist, develop and implement new technologies, innovative design practices and standards to meet business needs through technical expertise and experience. Develop ideas and initiatives to enhance the capabilities of the design team and the company’s competitive position by understanding the market, customers and competitors. Define complex issues with ambiguous information, provide technical expertise and mentoring to design personnel, and stimulate critical thinking to solve complex problems. Synthesise various considerations to make tough decisions, striking a balance with trade‑offs and pushing for better solutions to move forward. Develop technical policies and procedures relating to design, and implement change as required. Assess Network Services capabilities and identify opportunities, actively engaging with the Design Leadership team to foster a collaborative and agile mindset. Key Criteria & Qualifications Design within AutoCAD and deliver solutions to complex problems or large projects, applying engineering principles to create better outcomes that meet Network Services and statutory/regulatory requirements. Detailed knowledge of new protection and control technologies such as IEC61850 & SCADA implementation. Experience in fault current analysis (hand calculations and software such as DigSilent PowerFactory, SSE, Sincal). In-depth knowledge of regulatory requirements, OH&S Act, ‘Safety in Design’ guidelines, standards and codes. Extensive design and protection settings experience in the electrical utility industry. Expert design and compliance knowledge of protection and control systems in electric distribution and transmission networks in accordance with Australian standards. Extensive experience specifying and configuring protection relays from major suppliers. Approximately 10 years of experience in the power industry, including at least 2 years in a senior engineering capacity. A Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) or equivalent. Registration as a Professional Engineer in Australia; holding or working toward National Engineering Registration (NER) or RPEQ is highly regarded.
