CASA Inspector (Flight Operations)/Senior CASA Inspector (Flight Operations) Civil Aviation Safety Authority – Brisbane QLD CASA is looking to recruit a Flying Operations Inspector (FO1) or a Senior Flying Operations Inspector (FO2) for the Regulatory Oversight Division. The role sits within a team of inspectors and related staff who work collaboratively to deliver CASA’s strategic operational priorities. FO1 Responsibilities Exercise decision‑making, including acting as a delegate, on routine regulatory service and surveillance activities such as flight assessments and oversight of authorisation holders. Collaborate with colleagues, providing detailed, timely input, sharing knowledge and managing personal performance according to CASA’s values, policies and practices. Actively participate in work programs that deliver CASA’s strategies, including issuing approvals, compliance assurance, regulatory improvement, stakeholder engagement and resolution of safety issues. Provide professional regulatory services to regulated entities, government departments, the aviation sector and the public: give advice and technical guidance. Conduct oversight and education of industry examiners, provide technical input to professional development programmes and oversee proficiency checks in accordance with CASA policies. Identify non‑compliance or offences under civil aviation legislation or CASA policy, and present findings to stakeholders through reports with clear recommendations and risk identification. Assess and analyse industry information, engage stakeholders, monitor external influences and investigate scenarios to develop compliance strategies and mitigate risks. Contribute to a positive health and safety culture, including psychosocial wellbeing, and provide input where it may impact workplace safety. Engage positively with change. Perform other duties as required. FO2 Responsibilities Exercise decision‑making, including as a delegate, on complex regulatory service and surveillance activities such as flight assessments and oversight of authorisation holders. Ideal Candidate FO1 Works independently under managerial guidance with established regulatory practices and delegated responsibilities. Demonstrates initiative, analysis, problem‑solving, judgement and decision‑making, applying technical knowledge where standards may not cover circumstances. Has developed negotiation, facilitation, influencing and communication skills (written and verbal) to manage diverse stakeholder views at a senior level. Effectively engages in stakeholder management, including conflict resolution with regulated entities under time constraints. Identifies and assesses emerging issues and trends, develops work plans and monitors progress and outcomes. Seeks diverse perspectives to identify improvement opportunities. Understands aviation industry, civil aviation legislation and relevant national/international aviation standards. Has knowledge and skill in regulatory assessment. FO2 Works under direction from CASA with established regulatory practices and delegated responsibilities. Demonstrates initiative, analysis, problem‑solving, judgement and decision‑making, applying technical knowledge to complex or unusual matters. Well‑developed negotiation, facilitation, influencing and communication skills (written and verbal) to manage diverse stakeholder views at a senior level. Coaches colleagues on discrete tasks to deliver outcomes in complex environments, assessing emerging issues and developing work plans. In‑depth understanding of the aviation industry, civil aviation legislation and relevant national/international aviation standards. Desirable Flight Instructor Rating with a current Pilot Instructor Rating proficiency check or equivalent. Recent experience with a Part 141 or 142 operator, including training and checking experience. Auditing experience. Australian Class C driver’s licence. Eligibility Requirements Pre‑employment screening, police record check and willingness to provide required information. Australian citizen with ability to obtain and maintain required security clearance. Ability to perform, or be available to perform, safety‑sensitive aviation activities as defined in the Civil Aviation Safety Regulations 1998. Pass pre‑employment alcohol and drug test. Eight or more years of appropriate experience, including an Air Transport Pilot’s Licence (Fixed Wing) or Commercial Pilot Licence (Helicopter Category Rating). Current Class 1 Medical certificate. Relevant civil or military qualifications such as flight examiner, instructor rating or training and checking pilot. Supervisory experience in aviation in a key person role or equivalent with a National Aviation Authority. Understanding of the Civil Aviation Act 1988 and relevant CASRs, CARs and guidance material. Hold or be eligible to hold an Australian Security Identification Card (ASIC). About CASA Safe skies for all—it begins with you.
