Research Associate – Climate UNSW Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia (Role located in Sydney, Australia at the UNSW node of the Climate Systems Hub, within the Climate Change Research Centre, Sydney, NSW.) The Climate Change Research Centre houses research expertise in Earth's climate, applying basic scientific principles to pressing questions on climate dynamics and climate change extremes. This role focuses on Australia’s climate, its extremes and drivers, improving future projections to inform climate adaptation solutions across Australia. The candidate will develop research expertise through defined projects relevant to their field. About the Role Level A – $113,000–$121,000 plus 17 % superannuation and annual leave loading Fixed term – 11 months (or until 31 December 2026) Full‑time – 35 hours per week Responsibilities Contribute independently and as a team member in collaborative research focusing on high‑resolution rainfall extremes. Conduct research and enable teams to produce scholarly output recognized by peers. Co‑design and co‑produce research projects, interacting with stakeholders during the process. Communicate research findings by publishing in highly ranked journals and presenting at local, national, and global conferences. Undertake specific research projects under the guidance of a research leader, contributing to research activities. Develop and run atmosphere and/or coupled climate model simulations using WRF or similar models. Analyze observations/reanalysis in relation to model simulations. Analyze output from bespoke model experiments and large ensembles (e.g., CMIP, CORDEX, NARCliM). Take on leadership opportunities such as PhD supervision, committee membership, leading workshops, etc. Participate in and/or present at conferences and/or workshops relevant to the project as required. Align with and actively demonstrate the university’s Code of Conduct and Values. Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures, ensuring safe actions for self and others. Selection Criteria PhD in Physical Climate Science, Climate Modelling, Atmosphere/Ocean Dynamics, or a related discipline. Demonstrated ability to conduct high‑quality scientific research independently and within a collaborative team. Track record of strong research and publication relative to the opportunity. High‑level analytical and problem‑solving skills. Highly developed verbal and written communication skills. Programming skills in a Unix/Linux environment (e.g., Python, Fortran, MATLAB, R). Knowledge of regional climate processes and/or land‑atmosphere interactions and/or atmospheric dynamics. Experience developing experiments and running regional climate simulations with WRF, including bias‑correction of boundary conditions. Understanding and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives, and values, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
