Conservation Council Member (Identified)
This position is an identified position and is available to an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person.
SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE
The Sydney Opera House is a globally recognised symbol of Australia, synonymous with creativity and inspiration, one of the architectural wonders of the 20th century, the nation’s most visited tourism destination and among the world’s busiest performing arts centres.
For generations, Tubowgule, the land on which the Opera House stands, has been a place of gathering and belonging. Its traditional custodians, the Gadigal, would meet on the tidal peninsula to eat and share stories and culture. The Opera House carries on this legacy of gathering and storytelling, and embraces and celebrates the culture of Australia’s First Peoples.
The Opera House is a globally recognised symbol of Australia, synonymous with creativity and inspiration, one of the architectural wonders of the 20th century, the nation’s most visited tourism destinations and among the world’s busiest performing arts centres.
Drawing on the foundational idea that the Opera House was built to serve the community, our new organisational strategy for 2024-26 sets out the ambition to be Everyone’s House. To achieve this, the Opera House is focused on four themes:
Everyone feels welcome here.
We better understand and connect with the community.
We are future ready.
We lead and inspire positive change.
A key strategic goal is ensuring that First Nations voices and culture play a vital role in shaping the Opera House and its future – being at the forefront of the continuation of the cultural care, truth telling and storytelling about this place. We identified five focus areas to achieve systemic change:
- Self-determination – First Nations peoples and cultures are at all levels and parts of the organisation, making decisions and amplifying First Nations voices.
- Reimagining and truth telling – First Nations voices are at the forefront of storytelling about Tubowgule, the land and its people, as well as stories on and off the Opera House’s stages.
Cultural safety – First Nations staff and audiences, and their cultural expressions, knowledge and perspectives are protected and celebrated at the Opera House.
Embedding First Nations values in business – Governance and decision-making processes prioritise the involvement and agency of First Nations people.
Connecting with communities – The Opera House supports, shares and connects with First Nations peoples, contributing to key conversations and community events and advancing First Nations cultures and capacity-building in the arts.
For more information about the Opera House, please refer to our website.
