Senior Systems Engineer – Microsoft 365 (Contract) Location: Melbourne (Hybrid – minimum 2 days onsite)Contract Length: 8 months (extension likely)Start: End Jan / Early Feb preferred We’re working with a large, well‑established Australian technology organisation undergoing uplift across its Microsoft 365 and messaging platforms. This is a senior, project‑focused contract for a highly experienced Systems Engineer with deep expertise in Exchange Online, mail flow and M365 operations. This role suits someone who enjoys getting into complex environments, untangling legacy configurations, and leaving platforms in a better state than they found them. The Opportunity You’ll join a core platform engineering function and take ownership of reviewing, cleaning up and improving a large‑scale Microsoft 365 mail environment. While there is some BAU, the focus is firmly on audit, optimisation and strategic improvement, with the opportunity to influence longer‑term direction. You’ll work closely with engineering, security and notifications teams in a shared‑ownership model, requiring strong technical judgement and stakeholder engagement skills. Key Responsibilities Audit and optimise Exchange Online mail flow architecture Manage and troubleshoot SMTP relays, connectors and message tracking Review and uplift email security (SPF, DKIM, DMARC) Support Active Directory components including domain trusts, DNS integration and AD Certificate Services Monitor and report on Microsoft 365 service health, availability and performance Build PowerShell scripts for automated reporting, alerting and monitoring Create dashboards, alerts and thresholds to proactively identify issues Collaborate across multiple teams to suggest and implement platform improvements What We’re Looking For Senior‑level experience as a Systems Engineer / M365 / Messaging Engineer Strong hands‑on expertise with Exchange Online and mail flow Solid background in Active Directory, DNS and certificate services Experience with M365 monitoring, health reporting and security Confident PowerShell scripting skills (reporting, alerting, automation) Comfortable working in complex, shared‑ownership enterprise environments MSP or systems integrator background highly regarded Why This Role?
