The approach is strengths‑based, empowering people and communities to take control over their own lives and building on individual, family, community and cultural strengths. THE ROLE This position is part of the STARTTS Community Development Team and will work with support structures in the Mandaean community in South West Sydney Local Health District (SWSLHD) to increase the capacity of community leaders, volunteers, peer educators and community support structures. Key responsibilities include: Identifying and supporting people at risk of suicide or serious mental health illness. Delivering psycho‑education and lifestyle/well‑being group interventions to help community members identify signs of distress and develop coping strategies. Facilitating mutually supportive relationships, reducing social isolation and stigma associated with seeking mental health assistance. Increasing knowledge and access to a variety of mental health services. ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENT Relevant qualifications and experience in psychology, social work, mental health promotion, community development, counselling, group work or other related disciplines. Experience in group work and community development in a cross‑cultural context. Understanding of torture and trauma impacts on individuals, families, and communities and its effect on resettlement in the Australian context. Adult education and/or training skills. Excellent understanding of mental health literacy and suicide prevention issues within the Mandaean community settling in South West Sydney. Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills in English and Arabic and proficiency in Microsoft Office. Knowledge of appropriate mental health literacy interventions and suicide prevention frameworks and strategies. Knowledge of nature‑based interventions for mental health and wellbeing. DESIRABLE REQUIREMENT Knowledge of stakeholders in the refugee/migrant/mental health sector in South West Sydney. Current NSW Driver's License. Child‑related employment: Working with Children Background Check and National Police Check. VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS This role is Category A. Vaccination and/or assessment is required for measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis B, varicella (chickenpox), diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), influenza and tuberculosis. COVID‑19 vaccination is strongly recommended, but not a requirement for employment. Successful candidates must provide evidence of vaccination and/or assessment. If you cannot comply with vaccination requirements before commencement, the offer of employment may be withdrawn. If you have a medical reason for not being vaccinated, a medical contraindication evidence will be required.
