Internship - Quality control of radioactive releases data for the DIRATA database

The primary objective of this internship role is to provide support to the Unit by collecting data for the IAEA Database on Discharges of Radionuclides to the Atmosphere and the Aquatic Environment (DIRATA), which compiles discharges from nuclear facilities globally. Responsibilities include gathering and organizing data from Member States and organizations, updating the user manual to integrate new database features, maintaining consistency in facility names, and enhancing visualization on the website. The intern will collaborate with experienced scientific staff in the Unit and receive guidance on operating database tools.

Functions / Key Results Expected

  • Data Entry and Upload
    • Gather and organize discharge data from nuclear installations provided by Member States and international organizations.
    • Accurately and promptly upload collected data to the DIRATA database.
  • User Manual Update
    • Revise the user manual to include new features and updates.
    • Ensure the manual is clear, comprehensive, and user-friendly.
  • Facility and Installation Updates
    • Update facility and installation names in the database for consistency and accuracy.
    • Verify correctness of facility and installation information.
  • Visualization Improvements
    • Enhance data visualization tools on the DIRATA website.
    • Collaborate to implement new visualization features and enhance existing ones.
  • Quality Control and Verification
    • Conduct regular quality checks on uploaded data for accuracy and completeness.
    • Ensure consistency of data across entries and sources.
  • Feedback and Reporting
    • Collect user feedback and suggestions for database improvements.
    • Prepare reports on data entry progress and proposed solutions for encountered issues.

Qualifications and Experience

  • University Degree in Information Technology, Environmental Sciences, or Engineering.
  • Effective data organization and structuring skills.
  • Data analysis and verification abilities.
  • Basic knowledge of database software and data visualization tools.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
  • Experience in radiation safety is advantageous.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English; familiarity with other IAEA official languages is a plus.
  • Teamwork skills.

Applicant Eligibility

  • Minimum age of 20 and completion of at least three years of university studies.
  • Application allowed within one year after obtaining a bachelor's, master's, or doctorate degree.
  • No prior participation in the IAEA's internship programme.
  • Submission of two signed letters of recommendation.
  • Proficiency in English required; knowledge of other IAEA official languages beneficial.
