The internship vacancies for up to a maximum six positions (each of maximum of six months) are located in Vienna, Austria at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)/United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR).

UNSCEAR was established in 1955 by the General Assembly in response to widespread concerns about the effects of ionizing radiation on human health and the environment.

The Scientific Committee assesses global and regional levels of radiation exposure and its health and environmental effects.
The secretariat, based in Vienna, is provided under arrangements by UNEP.

The secretariat collates scientific data from Member States and other international organizations and engages specialists to analyze information, study relevant scientific literature and produce scientific reviews for scrutiny at the Committee's annual sessions.

Following approval by the Scientific Committee, substantive assessments are reported to the General Assembly and published by the United Nations for the wider benefit of the scientific community and the general public.

Governments and organizations throughout the world rely on the Committee's estimates as the scientific basis for evaluating radiation risk and for establishing protective measures

The interns will be reporting to the Senior Scientific Officer under the overall management of the Secretary of the Committee at the UNSCEAR secretariat.

They will engage in and work with renown scientists and learn about the United Nations and UNSCEAR's work.
The positions are for three to six months starting in October 2023.
The internship is UNPAID.

The Internship is for 6 months and UNPAID.

Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.

Responsibilities:

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Assisting in the preparation of scientific documents for the annual UNSCEAR session;
  • Assisting with the research, literature review and compilation of statistical data;
  • Assisting with the preparation of scientific presentation material;
  • Providing administrative and technical support to meetings of experts and the 71st annual session May 2024);
  • Providing ad hoc support with administrative tasks and gaining insight in UN procedures and administrative processes;
  • Assisting with the maintenance of the UNSCEAR website, library, social media, outreach activities and other online tools.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

  • Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, higher); or

(b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent). (OFFICIAL PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY IN SUPPORT OF ONE OF THE ABOVE OPTIONS HAS TO BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION).

The fields of study which qualify for this Job Opening are as follows:
natural sciences, information or library, environmental or medical science or law, administration or management.
