_on the Colonial Entanglement of Sound Recordings _
(part-time / 20 hours per week)

The project "On the Colonial Entanglement of

Sound Recordings:
The Expedition of Viennese Anthropologist

Rudolf Pöch to Papua New Guinea ", led by Cornelia Gruber and Clemens Gütl, is concerned with the

structured research and consolidation of archival materials and metadata related to the expedition of the Viennese

physician and anthropologist Rudolf Pöch to what is today known as Papua New Guinea

Subsequently, the collected data and metadata will serve as the basis for an exemplary investigation into the

history of colonial entanglement of expeditions, and thus of historical sound recordings and knowledge formation

in the Phonogrammarchiv of the OeAW. The results of the source research will be made available on a website.

The project is funded by the Magistratsabteilung - Kultur, Wissenschafts
- und Forschungsförderung der Stadt

Wien.

Your tasks:

  • Research, critical review, and processing of historical sources in Austrian archives and museums
  • Search for primary sources (online) in international institutions (archives, museums, etc.)
  • Preparation of the metadata for presentation on a website (in close cooperation with website designer)
  • Locating and establishing and maintaining contact with other archives, researchers, and descendants of the
individuals who were recorded

  • Coorganization of an international hybrid network meeting

Your profile:

  • Completed studies (MA, Mag., Dipl.) relevant to project
  • Strong methodological skill set relevant to job description and practical experience in archival research
(critical analysis, review, and preparation of historical sources and secondary literature, etc.)

  • Knowledge of the history of European colonialism, anthropology, and ethnology of the 19th and 20th
centuries

  • Knowledge of discourses of postcolonial / decolonial studies, and critical consciousness concerning the
assessment of historical documents and "research expeditions" of the colonial period

  • Independent, selfreliant, and wellorganized
  • Team orientation, great communication skills
  • Very good English and German language skills
  • Interest in historical sound recordings and issues of representation
  • Desired additional knowledge: transcription of documents in current script; language skills in Dutch;
experience in planning and organizing events; relevant knowledge around the project topic, e.g., critical

archival studies, history of Papua New Guinea

  • Collective agreement gross salary of € 1.647,95 per month
