  • Elections in proportional electoral systems tend to produce multiparty systems without a clear majority for a single party. Therefore, election outcomes provide room for interpretation among journalists, politicians, and voters. The purpose of the doctoral project "
- _And the winner is ? The battle for the most impactful framing of election results between media and politics in multi-party systems_" is to understand the variety, antecedents, and consequences of how politicians and journalists frame election results in the immediate aftermath of democratic elections. The consequences concern voter perceptions of winners and losers alongside framing effects on political and media cynicism.
  • You will take the leading role on the three subprojects, under the supervision of Dr Katjana Gattermann (project leader) and Dr Linda Bos, who are both based at ASCoR. The third supervisor, Thomas Meyer, PhD, is based at the University of Vienna.
  • Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
  • Planning and conducting three studies as outlined in the project proposal;
  • Quantitative data analysis and writing scientific articles as part of the doctoral dissertation;
  • Conference presentations;
  • Taking active part in the research environment at ASCoR, including research seminars and the PhD club, among others;
  • It is also expected that you acquire detailed knowledge of the literature on mediapolitics relations, framing, and media effects.
  • Submission of a PhD dissertation within the period of appointment is expected.

Your experience and profile:

  • An interest in political communication and mediapolitics relations;
  • Familiarity with electoral politics in Europe and of (some) European political, party, and/or electoral systems is a plus;
  • A quantitative empirical research focus and a strong interest in quantitative content analysis; previous training and very good knowledge of this method is an asset;
  • Proven proficiency in statistical software such as SPSS, Stata or R;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English;
  • Independent thinking and critical analytical skills;
  • A scientific mindset, inquisitive personality, and the capacity of working independently;
  • Strong interpersonal and project management skills.

Desirable experiences:

  • Previous experience with research on election campaigns or political news;
  • Experience as a research assistant.

What we can offer you- Your salary will be €2541 gross per month in the first year and will increase to €3247 in the final year, based on full-time employment and in keeping with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
