This position is located in the Border Management Branch (BMB) - Criminal Network Disruption Global Programme/CRIMJUST, Division for Operations (DO), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in Vienna.

The Research Assistant (Programme Management) will work under the overall guidance and direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer managing the Afghan Opiate Trade Project (AOTP).


Responsibilities:

Within assigned authority, the Research Assistant (Programme Management) will be responsible for the following specific duties:

  • Assist in the monitoring and analysis of the trafficking of Afghan opiates and other related criminal activities globally by selecting and evaluating information sources, collecting and analysing data, preparing background materials for assessment papers, studies, briefs and reports and contributing to analytical products, responding to queries, knowledge management planning, and decision making.
  • Contribute to various primary and secondary analytical activities of AOTP, including through the coordination of data collection and field research, and supporting the recruitment of consultants and selection of external providers.
  • Assemble and examine original statistical material to ensure accuracy, clarity and validity; make appropriate adjustments; analyse data and draft reports, prepare prepublication data for Member States review.
  • Prepare infographics, data sets, charts and/or diagrams to enable an indepth analysis of the retrieved data, and contribute to and maintain any relevant databases.
  • Support outreach efforts by preparing communication products, promotional materials, social media messaging, presentations for internal and external audiences and supporting promotional events and activities.
  • Ensure that procedural requirements related to sound management of the AOTP budget and funding (project preparation and submissions, progress and evaluation reports, financial statements etc.) are met; contribute to the preparation of related documents (work plan, budget, etc.).
  • Assist in the planning, organizing and conducting of conferences, meetings and training events, including preparing relevant materials, liaising with internal and external partners, providing administrative, travelrelated and logístical support.
  • Liaise with relevant UNODC regional/country offices and other organizational units in UNODC Headquarters to maintain the flow of information on project related matters.
  • Perform other related work as required.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Job - Specific Qualification

Having passed the Administrative Support Assessment Test [in English] at the United Nations headquarters, Economic Commission for Africa, Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, United Nations Office at Geneva, United Nations Office at Vienna, International criminal tribunal for Rwanda or International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia may be accepted in lieu of the GGST.

Work Experience


Experience creating content for digital publishing formats and/or platforms, including adapting briefing notes, press releases and/or speeches for social media and/or websites, is required.

Experience in programme/project administration and monitoring, preferably in drugs and crime related areas, is required.

Experience with database or programming languages is desirable.

Research experience in areas related to the trafficking of Afghan opiates is desirable.

Experience in working with Government counterparts and law enforcement organizations in the field is desirable.

Experience with the United Nations system or similar international organization is desirable.

Languages:
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
