Organizational Setting


The Division of Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Waste Technology (NEFW) comprises the Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Materials Section, the Waste Technology Section, the Decommissioning & Environmental Remediation Section and the Research Reactor Section.

The Division seeks to support Member States in building their capacity to access technologies, to share good practices and to develop safe and effective approaches across all aspects of research reactors, nuclear fuel cycle, decommissioning, radioactive waste management and environmental remediation.

The Decommissioning & Environmental Remediation Section (DERS) assists Member States with decommissioning and environmental remediation.

It covers a broad spectrum of activities and is organized into two teams responsible for the decommissioning, and the environmental remediation respectively.

Efforts are focused mainly on sharing good practices and supporting capacity building on planning and preparing decommissioning and environmental remediation programmes and projects as well as implementation, including transition from operation to decommissioning, characterization, decontamination, dismantling and demolition, related waste management and post-implementation controls, improving effectiveness and efficiency and supporting related research and innovations.

Given the widespread nature of decommissioning and environmental remediation challenges, the Section cooperates with a wide range of units in the IAEA and international organizations.

Main Purpose


The main purpose of the experts' involvement will contribute to the Sections aim to foster technology and knowledge transfer, the adoption of sound policies and strategies, and promotes information exchange, with the aim of building Member States' capacity in all aspects of decommissioning and environmental remediation.

The Decommissioning and Environmental Remediation Section reaches out to qualified experts who have the required knowledge and skills for the following functions:

Provide specialized advice to:
- perform technical editing of multi-author documents;
- develop a sequence of web articles based on existing publications and documents;
- develop training courses building on existing guidance/reference material and lectures;
- develop story boards for eLearning in correlation of published documents;
Depending on the specific assignment, the expected adequate level of expertise ranges from basic general understanding to prior professional experience with some in-depth technical understanding in:

Education, Experience and Language Skills

  • University Degree or Advanced University Degree in Applied Science and Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Mechanics or related field
  • Doctorate Degree is an asset
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience in editing, document writing and/or training and knowledge transfer in the expert areas of decommissioning and environmental remediation
  • Relevant professional experience at the national, regional and/or international level is an asset.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work effectively with people of different national and cultural backgrounds with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English. Knowledge of another official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) an asset.
