The Joint FAO/IAEA Centre of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture (CJN) aims to enhance food security, reduce poverty, and promote sustainable agriculture by utilizing nuclear techniques and related technologies. The CJN is composed of five Sections with associated laboratories in Seibersdorf, Austria, focusing on various areas such as animal production, plant breeding, insect pest control, soil and water management, crop nutrition, and food safety.

The main activities of the CJN revolve around:

  • Supporting and coordinating research and development (R-D) activities
  • Building capacity and providing technology to FAO/IAEA Members
  • Offering laboratory and technical support and assistance
  • Providing policy advice and knowledge dissemination

Reporting Lines:

The Senior Technical Officer (Plant Breeding and Genetics) reports to the Director of the Joint FAO/IAEA Centre (CJN).

Technical Focus:

  • Enhancing induced mutagenesis and advanced biotechnologies for plant breeding and crop improvement
  • Utilizing nuclear and related techniques to boost genetic variation and plant breeding efficiency
  • Promoting the use of plant breeding for enhanced crop productivity, plant health, and climate-change adaptation

Key Functions:

  • Leading the development, implementation, and evaluation of technical aspects of assigned programmes/projects
  • Coordinating programmes and assessing trends for effective implementation of projects
  • Supervising the preparation of various written outputs and providing substantive support to meetings and conferences
  • Managing outreach activities, conducting training workshops and seminars, and leading field missions
  • Offering advice to develop policies, strategies, and protocols related to FAO's work

Specific Functions:

  • Implementing and monitoring programme activities related to induced genetic variation and plant breeding for crop improvement
  • Designing research activities and providing technical support and policy advice to FAO and IAEA Members
  • Leading coordination of the Plant Breeding and Genetics Section and overseeing programmatic implementation
  • Providing strategic direction for research innovation frameworks for plant breeding and crop improvement
  • Facilitating the establishment of seed system modalities and managing research and development activities
  • Ensuring timely publication of updates and monitoring policy and technical developments
  • Contributing to emergency response in food and agriculture

Candidates Will Be Assessed Against The Following:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Advanced degree in biological or agricultural sciences with specialization in plant breeding or related field
  • Ten years of experience in plant breeding and crop improvement
  • Proficiency in English and intermediate knowledge of another official FAO language
